removing front springs from shocks

I want to get the springs off the shock absorbers, the assemblies are removed off the car........ do I need a spring compressor??

You do. Not just any old spring compressor either, the front springs on the Caterham will only be 1.9" or 2.25" so most don't fit. I can't recommend a type to use because I used the dodgy zip-tie method (with shocks on the car, compress suspension by getting a fat mate to stand on the wishbones, bound the coils with zip-ties, get fat mate off wishbones, remove from car etc).
That is unless you have adjustable platforms, in which case you might be able to wind them down until the spring is free.

I''ve used two small ratchet straps to compress the springs. Normal spring compressors don't fit between the coils. Take care if using tie wraps and or ratchet straps as a flying spring can hurt.

A flying spring can take all your front teeth out. Only use a tool designed for race coil overs. Most 7 service agents have one.
