Replacing a loom in a Supersprint, options?

Afternoon all. Last year I picked up an old 1700 Supersprint to take to Spain, and was very grateful for the help of fellow sevenistas with all of that. The car is now in Spain (not registered... yet) and its guardian has decided it needed a little restoration (or he was bored which is far more likely). Following a rebuild of the back end he has come to the conclusion that the wiring is too old and crunchy for his liking so it would seem logical to replace the loom.

At this point my reaction was along the lines of "it's the only 24 year old british sportscar I've ever driven where EVERYTHING worked, so if it ain't broke etc etc" but I have learned to bite my tongue!!!

So - CC will sell us a new loom for £375 plus the dreaded, but they just farm it out and apply a margin, which is fair enough. However I can get an off-the shelf loom from elsewhere for the generic seven replicas that are out there, for a lot less. Can't really imagine the CC one will massively different.

Has anyone replaced a loom in an older Seven without making one up from scratch? Any other bright ideas out there?

Speak to Redline Components in Caterham. They will have one for less than Caterham's price I suspect.

Or you could speak to MES, the people who make Caterham's looms on [phone]

I would avoid a generic kit car loom like the plague. I bought one once. Utter rubbish.

I did this in a 1991 Supersprint a couple of years ago, and I think you'd be mad to do anything other than use a "proper" Caterham Cars loom.

Having said that, depending on the spec of the car, there are likely to be quite a few wires that can be removed, or at least shortened, for a surprising weight saving...

Thanks both - helpful feedback borne of experience is exactly what I was hoping for. While it's tempting to save £200 it could easily be outweighed by the grief of having a load of junk to work with!
