Been thinking about taking the plunge into buying a U.S. based kit. I did email Caterham USA as I wanted to do the build in modules, but they suggested just buy the entire kit at once as the shipping/importation costs would far outweight any kind of lower cost attempts.
I am curious though as I would have enough funds for a classic version in about a years time. Yet, would eventually like to keep upgrading later on down the road to different spec, i.e. get a classic model, but with the SV chassis first? Is this possible to sort of spec what parts you want at first and then upgrade later on? Anyone in the U.S. done a build like this?

You can do a build like this - start with the basic and upgrade later. In fact most owners seem to end up doing this through upgraditus anyway. However, it is more expensive since you buy the components twice. Also as Cat USA rightly point out the delivery costs are astronomical. It may be cheaper to order upgrades direct from Cat UK if you are on the US East Coast as it saves money and a lot of time.
The cheapest way into a car will always be second hand and then upgrade it to the spec you want. I suggest scanning the classified ads at USA7s to get an idea of value for spec.
I assume you live in a state which allows you to easily register a car?
Indeed I do. And am toying with options of varying degrees. I'm just looking at the spread for cost per fun on each model and it just doesn't seem to justify spending 45k on an R300 when I could buy the classic with some of the bits an bobs I want, all the while getting just as much excitement and fun out of the car. Hell, if the uprights don't change throughout the range I can design/build my own longer a-arms among other pieces...
