Engine spec of Supersport R and R400 (Duratec)
Discussion
Does anyone know what Caterham have done to the Duratec engine in the Supersport R, and also what they have upgraded from there to get the 210 bhp out of the R400? I was surprised to learn that the R400 doesn't have throttle bodies, and so therefore can assume that they haven't done much to get an extra 30 bhp out of it over the standard R. Surely it can't just be cams and a remap? Otherwise the Supersport R with a pair of Piper 1892 cams, and an Omex/Emerald K6 will see you well on your way to R400 territory for considerably less money.
Any detail on this would be appreciated.
PS Does the Supersport R have a light flywheel and ARP rod bolts as std?

I can answer some of your questions about the R400. It has up-rated cams and springs and is fitted with ARP big end bolts to allow another 500rpm. The Duratec is an easy engine to get 210 BHP so what you say is correct.
In terms of going your own upgrade route, it is a balance of saving money against having a genuine R400. A supersport R will always be a Supersport R, and if it is non standard, then it may reflect in the price, if you ever came to sell it.

You have to remember as well that there are lots of other things the R400 comes with as standard aside from just the power hike (dry sump, 6 speed gearbox, brakes, carbon bits. In fact, a quick add up of all these on the options sheet would cost you around £6k to add to the Supersport R, so the R400 isn't exactly a bad deal, though if you don't want those parts then the Supersport R is obviously more flexible, though as has been mentioned, an upgraded Supersport R will likely not be worth as much as an R400, even if it's all Caterham official upgrades (and certainly not if you go aftermarket).

Forgetting resale values etc, does anyone know what the technical specs of these engines are? I'd like to know what cams (inc specs) the R400 uses.
Don't want to sound flippant, but they are Caterham 210BHP Cams and are bespoke to the CPT brand. As far as I know, the supplier and timing figures for them are not in the public domain (and have probably change over the years anyway). The early R400 engine was developed by Cosworth, but Caterham now produce their own CPT(Caterham Power Train)engine and cams are not an aftermarket item - although there are plenty out there of similar spec. You can buy them here: http://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product.php?id_prod...
Having dug out a set from a 2008 (early CPT) engine this morning, I think the numbers on the cams (and springs) suggested they're manufactured by Kent Cams, but the numbers do not match any of their aftermarket stock. KCRLD210
