I didn't buy P7 HPC in the end but came very close. Having done a lot of research on this car and having driven/inspected it, I can honestly say its a cracking car. There's been a fair bit of conflicting info about it but here's the facts for anyone considering it:

It's a genuine HPC, verified by the "H" in the vin number. It's on the post 96 chassis, which is original and still in superb condition. Paint and panels are very good too. Big brakes and wide track plus LSD and straight cut 5 speed Quaiffe box.

It's got a decent amount of history.

Oh and what's more, it a genuine 218 Swindon built engine in it, with some additional mods since factory supplied. All in all a great car and the only reason for posting was that I thought this would be helpful to someone in the market and also Stuart has been most helpful in my search.

So why didn't you buy? I looked at this for a while but concluded it wasn't really a first timer 7...

My thoughts too.
The dealer seemed to have sold his stock of cross flow and k series cars but the HPC is still left for sale.

Well it was a very close run thing but in the end I opted for a very high end Duratec instead. I've had a few HPC cars in the past I felt it might be like going back to an old girlfriend somehow. The lure of the Duratec was its bang up to date motor, power, efficiency and potential reliability.

I wouldn't hesitate recommending the HPC though. You won't buy better and you'd sell for more than you paid if you kept it a year.

HPC's are great cars, great for as a first Caterham.

The engine is great, it gives enough power and the noise on Carbs is fantastic.

The only real downsides they do consume fuel at a greater rate than some of the K series, so stopping for fuel can be a pain.

Shame the Anniversary Green/Yellow 1998 HPC at Woodcote is injected, if it was on Carbs it would be perfect!

Are Swindon built engines actually built in Swindon? If so where?

Guessing it is these people.

Think they used to be known as Swindon Race Engineering (SRE) or did I dream that?

Thanks. Wonder if they do anything with K series? I might go and ask.

No, All engines except the JPE were built at Dartford by Caterham to a spec differing from Swindon's (maintly inlet maifold) which is why none of them make the quoted power. The ported heads (not the 218) were however doen by Swindon.

Story goes one of the 235 cars had the cams timed wrongly and all 16 valves were bent on the head. Caterham had the ehad fixed and sold the engine to the customer as new.
