TinTop to go with R300K
Discussion
The above comment reminds me of my visit to Caterham
Gatwick, when I bought my current car.
Having made my purchase, I was having a wander around the car park at the back of the showroom, when I came across a tatty looking Austin Metro, purposefully shod with Avon ZZS.
Clearly someone at Caterham has a similar approach to tintops!

It really depends on the role the tintop will play. Do you need a tow car that doubles as a family wagon, want a more refined sports tourer, or a playmate for the R300K?
For a wagon I would be looking at an Skoda Octavia or Superb estate.
For (more) refined sports car, the Alpine A110 is the discerning drivers choice.
For a second playmate, my choice would be a Rover-era Mini Cooper, preferably the SPi with a Cooper S conversion (Si in factory trim)
So far I have the K-series Caterham, close enough to the R300 sweetspot.
A VW Golf estate for the family, but no towbar (deliberate)
… and the Cooper would be my second, but it has been 20 years since my first, and I fear that the halcyon days of driving the wee green beastie are best left in the past. May she rust in peace.

I've had Renault sports along side my Caterham since 2012.
Currently on a Megane 280 Cup and very happy
If I didn't need it to carry the dog, I think I'd have opted for an Alpine A110. But the Megane is fast, comfortable and practical. It's a manual too, which you don't see that much in these cars sorts of cars anymore.

I hanker after an Elise S1. Certain it’ll be the car I kick myself for not buying in ten years.
I have a base 996C2 and think an Elise would be the perfect fit between that and a track only Caterham.
Just need more play money and a larger garage (or lift).
Back in the day I preferred the S2, but I think the S1 has aged really well.I have a base 996C2 and think an Elise would be the perfect fit between that and a track only Caterham.

I'd love a good S1. It would have to replace the Caterham though as I've only got enough time/space/money for one ridiculous car.

How's it been Steve?
Interesting to drive at legal speeds?
My xkr was very much a one trick pony, in a straight line, throttle to floor and take off, corners it just felt heavy
Well it weighs 1800kg so when comparing to a 7 they are light years apart…..but for a tin top I find it surprisingly agile and planted. I don’t drive it in Race on the road much, especially in winter…it switches everything off in terms of tractions control etc so it can get “exciting” quite quickly LOL. I’ve now had it nearly 4 years, not done many miles but enjoyed them all. I’m just back from Northumberland where it cruised comfortably home for 300 miles and gave 32mpg, but at the flick of a switch and a heavier right foot you can be in the smiles arena in a heartbeat. I’m not planning to part with it any time soon. Definitely worth a test drive if you are looking for this kind of machine.Interesting to drive at legal speeds?

The only thing that irks me….Alfa have restricted the exhaust note in everything but Race LOL. You have to be above 4500rpm for it to sound like it should. There is an after market addition to make it driver selected if you want louder or quieter, but it doesn’t annoy me so much to pay a couple of hundred £ for a loud button :-)
