Hi all,

Had a prang in my caterham and need to remove the engine and box for it to be fixed.

I've found guides for other engines but not one specifically for a sigma engined car with the type 9 gearbox. Whilst I'm sure that lots of it is relevant, I was wondering if anyone could point me to a specific guide for a sigma?

Many thanks,

John

I have the Mazda box on mine but apparently the type 9 is smaller so this should be the same.. firstly make sure both engine lift points are attached to engine (mine only had 1)

Make sure you have a load balancer for the engine hoist - it makes it much easier

Put car on axle stands high enough to get under it. You will need a second person to feed the diff shaft back in to the gearbox on refitting). Disconnect battery from supply.

leave engine attached to gearbox. Remove connections to cooling / electrical / belt idler pulley etc. remove gear lever from above transmission tunnel. (On Mazda box drain transmission oil or it goes everywhere - I assume this would be the same on type 9). Remove electrical connectors from gearbox (from above). Disconnect exhaust downpipes

Disconnect clutch hydraulics. Disconnect earth cable from starter to chassis (under the car and probably attached to bell housing). Disconnect supply cable to starter motor (and cable ties to chassis). Disconnect fuel feed pipe from fuel rail.

Attach engine hoist and take up slack

Remove gearbox mount bolts and engine mounts

Make sure you have plenty of space above the car - between the ceiling if you are in a garage. Carefully hoist engine and gearbox out the chassis through the front (forward and up) You will need to adjust the load balancer as you go because the engine and box needs to be at quite an angle for it to come out. (This is where your gearbox oil leaks out if you haven’t drained it)

It’s actually quite easy but time consuming the first time you do it. And much easier with 2 people..
