Hi all. New (to me) 2012 caterham 125 sigma owner. I have a couple of initial questions I’ve been puzzling over and would appreciate any help with:

It’s a fixed cam 125- how long do people go between timing belt changes? I read 6 years somewhere? Mainly track day use planned.

140bhp spec: caterham have the supersport cams with a 30% discount (I’m a new member so can’t link to this, but they’re £800 with vat).

What other parts would I need to complete this? Is there a way to get 135 bhp rather than 140? (Magnificent sevens class is up to 135bhp). Has anyone done this recently? What were the all up costs?

What tyres are the caterham academy using this year and where do they get them from?

You will need a new ECU as well as the cams for 140.

If you want 135 it would be worth talking to Northampton Motorsport they might be able to get that with a ECU and remap on their Dyno.

Toyo supported the Caterham race series last year, specifically the Proxes R888R tyre. I’m sure Google will help you finding them near you.

The academy series us using the Toyo Proxes CF2 this year (185/60R13)

The series doesn't use R888 until roadsport spec and above thumbup

Edit to say - Protyre motorsport is the supplier for the championship this year

Hello Bill,

Are you planning on racing in Mag 7s? If so, we also race what was a 2012 Academy car.

If you’re going to race, I’d start with the Toyo 888r. They aren’t nearly as good as the Avons, while they are at their best for only one weekend, we get a few weekends out of a set.

Engine upgrades are a tricky area. We had the cams, ECU and airbox done to take it up to 142ish BHP by PGM. I’d strongly recommend speaking to Andy Jupp at PGM.

HOWEVER as you’ve spotted 142ish BHP does put you in no-man’s land. The hard judgement call to make is which class will have the most entrants. The class rep can give an opinion.

My call would be to get an entirely new 310r crate engine. I was surprised how inexpensive these are. That would then ensure your car was at the top of the 1600cc classes, and, also help enter the 7-Series and Grads. Though I believe the 270s may have larger grids.
