Any help diagnosing this fault on the gf's car would be appreciated.

Girlfriend bought a 2 year old Corsa last November from Arnold Clarke and in the last couple of months it has developed an intermittent fault (sometimes 2 or 3 times a week, then a couple of weeks it's fine) whereby it forgets it has a key fob and won't unlock the car. You have to use the key to open the passenger door which sets the alarm off (great for the neighbours as she frequently leaves for work at 6am) then run round to the drivers side to jump in and start it to cancel the noise. Occasionally it will open the doors but say 'key not found' and refuse to start until you pull the fob apart, take out then put back the battery and turn the ignition on to recode the key.

She took it back to AC who tried it and of course it worked then so said it's fine but she could take it to their garage which is 40 minutes away. None of this they say is covered by the warranty she took out with them.

Is this a known/common fault and an easy fix? All I get when I Google is how to replace the battery in the fob and recode the key by turning the ignition on.

This was supposed to be a reliable replacement for her old car and is so far less reliable and more stressful.

Does it behave the same with both fobs? (Presuming you have 2)

Yes it does. Put brand new batteries in both fobs, no difference

That post suggests that the keys need to be stored over 5m from the car. Its a security feature that disables the keys after 15 minutes if within range.

Yeah, tried keeping the keys at the other side of the house, and she's well away from the car when she's at work so that's not the issue.

Okay, so yesterday evening it did it again as she was leaving work but this time it really struggled to start, turning over slowly. Sounds like the battery is down.

Having had Jags for a couple of decades, and knowing they announce thousands of pounds worth of faults if the battery so much as drops an amp, I'm now wondering if this is the case here. Will pick up a new battery and see how it goes.
