Need some help on this one.
My “weekend” car is a 718 GT4 which I love, I’ve owned it a year and done 10,000 miles. (My daily is a battered BMW 640d).

I’m currently driving 220 miles a day visiting my mum who’s at the last stages of terminal cancer, I’m not working because of this and my savings are dwindling.
I might need to move the 718 on, I’d get around £60,000 from the trade and I’d like 15k back in the bank so my budget would be roughly 45k.

I keep seeing 700bhp-ish Mustangs in the mid 30’s and I’m tempted, very tempted. I do love a track day and I’m worried I’d be let down by the Mustang. I was surprised how quickly the power of the GT4 became normal to me and I am craving a little more.

What’s the consensus on the modified Mustangs in the track?
I’m easily pleased by cars and enjoy most. I know they’re all very different but I’ve also considered.
Exige S3
991.1 S
Corvette C6 or C7
Caterham 620
Jaguar F-Type R

I’ve driven the F-Type and did like it but I’m guessing there’d be a significant difference between a 500bhp jag abd 700bhp Mustang?
I drove a 991.1 S when they came out and was super impressed by it.

Whichever car I use it won’t be a garage queen, it will get used and will get tracked (although not abused and it’ll be very well maintained).

I’d love a 991.1 Turbo but they’re slightly out of budget. Another thing that appeals about the Mustang is being able to take my kids out, my son’s three and it’s a no-go with carbon buckets in the GT4.

I’m in Derbyshire and not far from DT Performance, they often have a Mustang I’d consider.

Any help is much appreciated

I'd recommend the Exige as it is more focussed than the others and cheaper to run and will have minimal/zero depreciation however it is civilised to drive around normally/to tracks etc.

But VERY different from the Mustang (which does look lovely). I've seen Mustangs tracked but, IMO, that's a lot of weight for the suspension, brakes and tyres to control.

I’m also interested in this as I’ve been eyeing a supercharged mustang for a while. Who are people using for insurance given the huge step up in power? My company won’t do over 20% stock power.

I've been thinking the same thing.

You’re right, it’s not easy to find insurance!

I use A-plan’s / Howden Thatcham branch, all mods declared, they’ve been very good.

Just to add, the Caterham 620 is great on track but you'll limited by the distance you can drive it to a track and back.

In my Elise I was finishing a track day and was pretty tired. A roof, 6 gears for cruising, a decent stereo and A/C made it a relatively relaxing drive home. As I left I saw a guy leaving in a Caterham and was glad I wasn't him!

A mustang can be made to work on track but ideally it needs coilovers and lots of additional cooling especially with a supercharger
