Any recommendations for a controller. Nothing silly expensive.

I can't get used to gaming on a keyboard on a laptop after ps3 gaming. Is a steam controller worth it. £39 or something else better?

I have a Logitech F310. It works fine. They are about £25.

The Xbox 360 wired controller is really good.

You can just use the PS3 controller if you already have it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpSaOJJIun8

Otherwise I'd use an Xbox controller because it's just plug-and-play.

I second the Xbox 360 controller, much prefer it to the PS3/PS4 controller.

laptop keyboard isn't going to cut it, but a usb kb and mouse combo will piss all over a controller for precision.

It depends on the type of game. If it's fps get a good mouse and keyboard, it's vastly superior.
xbox pad works as does the ps pad.
I have a steam controller, takes a bit of getting used to but I can see it being good if you can get used to it. Feels a bit plasticy in comparison to the usual suspects.

I think it really comes down to what feels good in the hand.

Just use a PlayStation one if that's what you like, not plug and play but not far off. I use a DS4 with a program called DS4 and it's plug and play once I start the program, and the touch pad can be used as a mouse.

Yes, there are two available. The official Microsoft ones and the cheap copies, IME they both do the same job however the MS one is much easier to setup, just PnP.

The copies need specific drivers and configuration and are a PITA to setup. They say X360 instead of Microsoft on them.

I use a PS4 controller, along with a bit of software called 'DS4'

connects vie bluetooth or the charging cable. its pretty plug n play.

the PS4 controller has a touch pad, which can double up as the mouse pointer which is surprisingly handy!

I've one of these as well. Set out like a PS3 controller, but your computer will recognise it as an Xbox 360 controller

I use an Xbox One wired controller with my Windows 7 PC. Has proven very useful for GTA V and am currently using it with Elite Dangerous.
