We are considering an xbox one X for our eldest to replace his xbox one S. I know its backward compatible with one games. However all his mates have xbox one/s consoles. So say he gets an X and goes out and buys the new COD for the X with 4K graphics etc.. or any other online game for the X. His mates go out and buy the xbox one version. Can they play together online?

Its going to be a bit of deal breaker this one and I can't find any info on it. MS seems to be side stepping the question based on the FAQs

I cannot see why it would not. It is the same game, same OS, using the same Microsoft XBox online services, just beefed up graphics.

yes they play together and play the same games. In simple terms, they just look better and load faster on the X.

I gameshare with someone who has an S (and have an X), any games I buy he can download and play and vice versa (and play together).

Super thanks for the info. So the xbox one X is basically an Xbox one with a better graphics card. I was thinking MS would be bringing out games that were written specifically for it. LIke a xbox one trying to play online with a 360.

Yes the games and online service are the same, so he can be in a game at 4k with his mates where they are at HD only

PC is even worse with different hardware and resolutions and it's been this way gaming online for years

It's still the same gen console, just beefed up to support new tech (4k, HDR, VR, etc). Same deal with the PS4 Pro, although not to such a great extent.

They would be seriously shooting themselves in the foot if they split the playerbase like that.

I play on my xbox one x with my mates who all (bar one) own vanilla xbox consoles.

As others have said its just better graphics for me

Yes it will work. If he hasn’t got a 4K TV however, don’t waste your money!
