I picked this up a couple of days ago and have managed about 4 hours so far.
Was a bit wary of the ultra-hype and great reviews - but a couple of online reviewers who I usually concur with gave this a big thumbs up.
So far....it's great. Think of a cross between The Last of Us and Dark Souls and you get the gist. Fight mechanics are pretty solid, enemies seem reasonably smart with some really tough challenges right from the start. Interchanges between son and father draw you into the story. Environments are amazingly well rendered the use of scale, colour, particle effects and lighting to bring the world to life is fantastic - I can't think of anything better on PS4 so far. Sound design is spot on too.
It's been a bit of a guided path through the early levels so far - given I've got open world fatigue that's no bad thing. Not sure if it opens out more after the initial areas but I've no real hankering to be let off the leash - the areas your guided through do still lend themselves to some limited exploring and discovery if that's your thing.
So for once, the hype seems to be justified (at least for me).....well worth the £s!

Safe to say i'll be purchasing. I was watching some play though on Twitch to see if it was going to be the sort and game i'd like and it looked very good. I got the impression that there's a lot of upgrading / collecting to be done, which i often find a bit overwhelming initially with these types of games.
Unfortunately I won't get a chance to play it over the weekend so i might buy it next week. Having said that i don't know who i'm trying to kid. I'm clearly going to buy it this evening and get in as many as hours as possible before the rest of life gets in the way over the weekend

It's not been upgrade / stat heavy so far.....but yeah underneath the hood it looks like there's the usual rune / slot / perks system lurking in there....not sure it'll start to get in the way though.Unfortunately I won't get a chance to play it over the weekend so i might buy it next week. I'm sure it won't. For me it's normally a case of putting in a bit of time to learn the system and it's no problem from there on, but i've played a couple of games in the past where that initial learning hump is so big i've given up with it.I watched the Thor trilogy over the last week so seeing a guy who could throw an axe and then draw it back to himself at will seemed, ermmm, familiar...
I like the look of this but I dislike games where you have to get through challenges to progress, being a big Fallout and Skyrim fan I like the fact that if you come across something too difficult you can just bugger off somewhere else, do other things and come back to it later. So do you have to follow a path set out before you?

Certainly so far I've been funneled towards a challenge and you've not option but to confront.....I've dropped down to easy once to get past one particular point.....towser said:

The crafting/upgrading system is easy enough to understand. Combat is well thought out and a lot of fun, noting that at this early stage I've only scratched the surface. I get the impression there's a lot more depth to it as you progress. As the OP mentioned, there're a couple of tough fights quite early on. For some, it's a case of working out the mechanics and once you've worked it out it's a rinse and repeat approach that can see you avoiding damage altogether. For others, mainly when you start facing different types of enemies at the same time that require a different approach to kill them, you really need to think about what you're doing and get your head around the controls.
I also like the seamless, uninterrupted flow of the game with no load screens. It switches from cut-scenes to you playing without interruption, which is quite immersive.

Picked this up on Friday and really haven’t enjoyed it at all... the combat controls (for me) don’t feel intuitive at all - to the extent that now being a few hours in I’ve tried all the different control layouts the game offers, and not found one which feels comfortable.
It does look stunning though so going to keep chipping away. Would agree that some initial fights are tough.
The kid is annoying me though.

I was quite wary of getting this game as I'm really not into these 'fantasy' and fighting kind of games, and initially I was a little bit meh about it, as there seemed to be loads of fighting at the beginning before actually doing much. Having said that, I've put quite a few hours into this, and the more I play it, the more I am loving it now. The story is moving along nicely, the fighting is getting easier now I have got my head around it, and I'm taking my time trying to complete all side missions/collectables. Graphics are the best I've seen on PS4, imagine they must be incredible on PS4 Pro. My only qualm is the weapons upgrading / perks, I find them quite confusing and am often not sure if I am actually using what I've selected. I'm sure it will all become clear at some point...
I'm about an hour in now, just got back to the house and met the bloke with the tattoo's.
Impressions so far are pretty good. The combat element is very entertaining if a little confusing(so many buttons to remember). The boy sidekick isn't bothering me too much and is easy to command.
Only downside i've found so far is it really is on rails, very little exploring possible as you're made to stick to the path, hoping this is going to change the further I get into the game.

It does open up as you get further into the game - you're still guided on the story, but you do get the opportunity to go where you like and do various side missions / collectables etc...JohnStitch said:

I'm still a little bit confused by the skills etc. Mostly the upgrades/perks come from the chests, however you can also upgrade with your XP/cash - It's not the most intuitive of systems to be honest, but I'm getting by. The best tip I can give is to get the boy upgraded - use him to shoot arrows at literally everything while you are fighting, as that makes it so much easier. Once you start to get the different arrows (further into the game) then the fighting does start to get easier.JohnStitch said:

Interesting. I'm guilty of under-using the boy, mainly because in the big fights with multiple opponents my brain runs out of the necessary capacity. Consequently I've focused on upgrading myself. One perk i have found though is that whilst i press the wrong button in combat on a fairly regular basis, 9 times out of 10 whatever button i pressed results in the chap giving someones noggin' a floggin' in one way shape or form. No doubt further into the game you need to press the right buttons, but hopefully by then i'll have got used to them.
On the skills tree i would recommend the upgrade that lets you charge up the axe while you're holding it allowing you to do a very heavy hitting axe cleave. Cleaving something in two comes with its own animation and is great fun
