Like the old zombie classic 'House of the Dead'? Are these types of games even possible these days, or have they died along with the CRT TV's?

Is a VR headset the only way to recreate the feeling?

VR is the way to go and it's incredible for fairly simple point and shooters. And thankfully in most of the games, if you run out of ammo and panic, your flailing arms may punch whatever enemy you're trying to defend yourself against biggrin

Nintento Wii did these pretty well. House of the Dead Overkill was good. You could even get a pistol shaped Wii-mote holder!

The Wii was really good at this type of game, I remember playing Ghost Squad for hours on it. Should still be possible for modern consoles, the last gen Xbox had the Kinect, I assume the PS4 had something similar too.

You can get this game on Steam, using a different input system.

+Eleventy For the VR suggestions.

SuperHot VR is fantastic. More of a puzzle game really.

Robo Recall (Oculus) - A brilliant fun action shooter. Includes dismemberment.

Gorn- VR Gladiator game. Most likely to punch your TV smile

SuperHot VR.....panic and you WILL die as you flail helplessly. Whoever dreamt that game up was a genius....super slow mo wins the day :-) takes a while to recalibrate your brain.

We bought a Wii (before prices went up during lockdown!) for exactly this...

Loads of guns, the Nyko Perfect Shot is the one to get if you can find one.

Games:

Ghost Squad
The House of the Dead: Overkill
The House of the Dead 2 & 3
Resident Evil: Chronicles
Dead Space: Extraction
Gunblade Pack

There were some good shooters for the PS3 move controller with gun attachment, graphics are less fuzzy than the Wii on a big TV.

Superhot is brilliant and I've broken my controllers more times on Gorn than I care to think about.

Not seeing any love for Arizona Sunshine (zombies!) its good as an adventure and the see how many waves you can survive bit in excellent.
Also I like Operation Warcade which is a VR version of those arcade machines where you shoot all sorts with the attached UZI's. Simple but fun.

Yeah, you could get simple and cheap, but effective, pistol shaped holders for the Moves and there was a pretty badass 'Sharpshooter' peripheral which took a Move and a Nav controller, but sadly wasn't supported in very many PS3 Move games. So disappointed they didn't support it for PSVR either, though there is an Aim peripheral which does much the same thing. Also not all that widely supported though.
