Anyone currently using Starlink for gaming - specifically stuff like GTA Online?

My Virgin contract is coming up and it’s a. unreliable b. Getting slower and slower

We will also be moving and I like the idea of being free from a cable company and their awful service.

My only concern is gaming and slow response.

Nothing super-fast paced, but when I'm at work I regularly play Minecraft with the kids - that is via Starlink at both ends (at home and at work). It's fast enough for that with reasonably low latency (certainly compared to legacy satellite internet providers).

If you have other fibre options then I would look into those first. Starlink is very good but its expensive and if you have other/better options then I would go with those. But to your question, GTA etc is fine. I have had small latency issues with the likes of COD but that's the sort of game where you want as low latency as you can get. Racing games can be hit and miss on occasion when it comes to latency.

I have had some oddities too, such as AppleTV only working on Apple devices over Starlink, not a massive issue but it was odd that the app that worked fine on my AndroidTV on other connections just fine didnt work on Starlink. We also had some issues relating to IPV6 and things like Ring but I was able to solve that.

Normal online games are ok but if you want Battlefield etc then at times it has a high ping and you die a lot......... But downloading new games etc is fine IME.

It'll work. Sounds like it'll be better than what you're dealing with now, but Virgin's infrastructure is old.

If your new place has dedicated fibre running to it, then go for that. You can have multigigabit speeds and <5ms latency. It won't be affected by weather or the whims of the idiot running the company, either.

Consider 5G. I'm on Three - its lightning fast, waaaay faster than the cabled options where I live, portable - I recently moved and it was a simple case of moving my kit, and powering it on. Latency is fine - I play Dayz and Star Citizen and I have no issues. Shot someone in the face in Dayz only a couple of days ago .

I get around a 32ms ping, sounds bad, but in practice its not.

On my Starlink I've seen between 19 and 32, so comparable. However, since we have no mobile coverage (at all, not no 5G) it is a no-brainer.

Ahh wow - quite remote then!? I live in a teeny tiny rural village and apparently there is no 5G where I live and yet.... (not saying this applies to you, but just was a suprise to me!!) - I have nice fast 5G (well , 140/70, which is faster than cable here 24/2)

I get a bit of a signal if I walk into our top field. hehe Before Starlink I was getting 10 down on a good day. Would love 5G but can't see it happening.

It’s great aside from as stated earlier stuff like cod , the ping is too high ,not unplayable but hard work as you are very disadvantaged .

Best thing I've done in years is to go on the open reach site and get them to install fibre to the house. All of the providers would only give me fiber to the box down the road, open reach installed it and now it's not just sucky virgin that do me fiber to the house.
