Sound related problem when playing a game - advice welcome...

tho i can play all my games with sound effects and music just fine, i've come across one 1996 game of mine which wont run if i select any of the soundcard options its setup prog lists.

for when i goto load it, it goes thru various self-checks before starting, and then quits with the line...
"Soundblaster not responding on selected port"

now its long help file does mention this problem and says to add this line to my autoexec.bat file...
'SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T1'

...an tho i have it makes no difference!
even tho its setup/config file 'does' show that the 'A220 etc' settings were recorded in its config file, an these match those settings that show up when you type 'set' in dos to show them as truely loaded into dos-memory.

note that the game plays fine without sound, but wont load-up if i choose to play it with sound.

a problem might be that i have onboard sound from my asus motherboard, whereas the setup prog lists soundcards only,
OR
maybe i need to match my onboard sound setup to that listed next to the 'sound blaster' command in my autoexec file?
BUT
- if thats the case then how do i find out what my onboard sound figures are, ie- DMA, IRQ, port address, card-type number - for i cant type in what i dont know ????

ps- this same pc i'm trying to run it on played it fine last year, so as ive had since NO new operating system or hardware added to it, then my pc must be capable of playing it now as it did before all-fine, only now somethings changed

so any advice appreciated

ive been doing some experimenting recently on this prob

ive found that by deleting the games cfg file, then switching off for several seconds > switching back on > an re-running its setup prog to set the screen to SVGA + audio to sound-blaster compatible - it 'does' load-up properly with sound!

however if your'e playing when suddenly the sound disapears, it means you have to redo 'all' the above all over again to get it back to normal!

therefore motherboard sound-chips must be damn tempremental compared to sound-cards
[think i'll have to then dump mine come the next upgrade]

I really can't take all of this in at this time and state of alertness, but maybe picking a cheapish sound card up from eBay is a fix?
