No longer a 360 owner

just got off the phone to Microsoft, cancelled my supcription to Live.
Long story short, i got the 3 red lights. it was fixed 8 months after I got it with the same problem. now its 3 months after my warrnety they want fecking £85
to sort it and give me 1 year warrenty. So that would make the cost of my 360 almost as much as my PS3. bought both when first out.
was I too quick to cancel? deon't feel like it at the moment. just pizzed of that the 360 has some great games but microsoft have put a bug in the system to get people to spend more money.
the guy on the phone said " if you spend the £85, all he other people who have paid have not had any problems since". So why is my 360 broken again after being fixed when in warrenty int he first place

In my opinion you have the sale of good act on your side (do a google) and you should pursue msoft to repair it gratis... the life span of a console should be longer than 15 months.

It sounds like the guy on the phone is suggesting that the problem is widespread and fixable such that it won't come back... that sounds very much like the problem is an inherent fault to me which means that they have to fix it free.
Write to the recorded delivery and then take legal action... what have you got to lose?

Word on the street is if you put it on its side (so the right way up, not on its end) and turn it on, wrapped in a slightly damp towl to stop it breathing, it'll fix itself.
The problem is caused by cheap solder being used on some of the connections, and when left on for long periods on its end, they melt, and come unstuck.

I tried all the usual things suggested to get it working again and nothing worked.
I then stripped it again and slapped just the motherboard under the grille in my top oven for 10 mins and kept checking how hot it was getting as i went.
So far i am a few days in and running it as you see in the bottom pic and it is still working.Not sure how long for of course, but
someone else i know got another 3 weeks out of his by wrapping it in a towel.The heatsinks get so hot inside they would take the skin off of your finger if you touched them, so maybe inside temps get to a high enough level to do something at least when wrapped up.Grilling it certainly worked for me anyway.

For every person who says "pah, mine was a launch console and i have had no issues" there will be someone else on their
third or fourth and all their friends will have had them replaced too.I mean, mine was also glitch free for over a year - right up until it died lol.
Forums all over the place are full of it.The thread on the av forums runs onto page 50 now with tales of death for example.What's
annoying is how some people still blame the user of the console though."oh not enough ventilation.." "you must have moved it.." etc etc.All rubbish of couurse for the majority of owners.
One guy on another forum just purshased a 360 elite (the newly released system) and that died almost straight away!
The 360 is a bloody awful design pure and simple.If yours isn't dead, you just got lucky, for how long though is debatable.

Sort of true. The solder in the xbox is lead free - not sure if that makes a difference to the melting point.
Makes it higher... needed some for a project and ordered lead free by mistake and the soldering iron had a job with it. Everything produced commercially has to have lead free solder these days, nothing unusual about the xbox having it.Digby said:

You could always replace that crappy ALU heatsink with one or two of the monolithic ones you find on PC's... preferably copper (better thermal properties) it might help matters as to be quite honest that HSF arangement, assuming that's how it is in the 360... is crap. Take it back to where you bought it from, I'm sure they have been told to replace them.

Just been reading a tear down on the Elite and caught something interesting. In the elite MS have expoxied the two chips down to stop them popping out the BGA sockets as the board warps due to heat.
If you're out of waranty and don't mind stripping the thing, rip the heat sink off and try pushing the chips back down and put some epoxy around the edges to hold it. Then obviously reassemble.

They're doing it to refurbished consoles too - bit of a half arsed solution still but nevertheless it might work.
I'm going to buy a new core in a couple hours to replace my out of warranty, expired premium. I'm tempted to buy some AS2 and a T8 screwdriver and I'll have a bash at my old box to see if I can get it grafting again too.

My launch console died last weekend. I've tried another powerpack as i know this can be a fault, but unfortunately mine still wont work. Have the dreaded red ring of death.
A colleague at work is on his third and his mate is on his fourth! I never really believed it until mine failed.
I'm gonna take it apart this weekend and see if me ,and more importantly, my clever Dad can fix it. If not, then i guess i've got to get a Core system before Forza 2 next Friday.
Argos are offering a 3 year warranty on the Core system for just £30! Will definitely be taking this option!
