Hope this is not a repost

Main point of interest:
REDMOND, Wash. — July 5, 2007 —Microsoft Corp. today announced that it will expand its global Xbox 360™ warranty coverage. Any Xbox 360 customer who experiences a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights will now be covered by a three year warranty from date of purchase. All other existing Xbox 360 warranty policies remain in place.

Bloody hell! They've come good haven't they? I assume it applies to all consoles even release day ones?
I know people say things will change once they achieve market dominance but at the moment it seems they really are sticking it to Sony when it comes to looking after customers.
Thanks for the post!

PS Bit a kick in the face for people who tried to fix theirs with now invalidated warranties

Nice move Bill.

The white noisy box is still priced roughly at launch price at around £200 for the basic back right? So over the past year or so the cost of making it must be coming down (think PC costs over the same period).

Am I being cynical that they waited until the unit manufacturing costs are much lower?

This is a massive problem and has been from day 1, I dont know how they managed to avoid even more bad press to be honest. I know all consoles have there initial problems but the 360 saga seems to have effected so many people, often more than once!

Still, it great to see Bill is finally listenting to what his customers are saying, free Xbox live now pleasehehe

I am on my fifth box and worked for Microsoft for some time they have recieved numerous letters from my former colleagues and I,and that would have been a fraction of the total number of complaints recieved.Currently the backlog of consoles waiting for repair in this country is costing MS customers and the global market is in a similar position so time to act for whatever reason.I know Neil Thompson has recieved numerous complaints but like most big companies the wheels turn slowly.

I saw this on the BBC news website earlier:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6275728.stm

Basically the same story. But equally, I saw this on Engaget:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/03/xbox-360-refuse...

Is the failure rate that bad? I am more than aware that the Internet (forums etc) distort the real extend of the issue and a few vocal owners are enough to make it seem that its endemic. Additionally, there are a lot of lies posted on a lot of websites and as a result its difficult to decipher the truth.

But, Microsoft being canny at the PR game may just be doing this as a PR stunt to take away any criticism, real or not. So, are they really that bad or is it just anti-Microsoft spin?

Faliure rate has been near 85% amongst early adopters who use their boxes on a regular basis, amongst twenty of my friends only one is still on the original box.If you switch your box on once or twice a week i would expect it to last for a bit longer, if you have played if for 20-50 hours per week on a fairly regular basis its unlikely to.

failure rate is bad...up to about 3 months ago, 10 of my family and friends who had one had no problems

since then 7 have failed.

Apparently this is costing MS $1bn ...so good on them I say.

Ok, so it is that bad.... eek

I seriously thought it was a bit of anti-MS publicity. Its often hard to decipher what is the truth and what is reality on the Internet. Everyone has a bad word to say about something if you look hard enough.

I am sure there is a hate site for Mother Terresa somewhere...

I wish it wasn't true as without these issues the 360 with its healthy games catalogue and tech spec would be the sole machine to own, as it stands due to its unreliability and poor support service(which should be sorted soon)it isn't.The extension of the warranty is good news but unless the technical issues are addressed people will still be dissatisfied, its a bit like buying a new car knowing it has an inherant fault but at least the warranty will cover it,thank goodness the 360 doesnt cost anything like as much as a car but you get my point and it's one i have raised with Microsoft at different levels.
There are plenty of Microsoft haters out there who wanted the machine to fail in many respects it hasn't we just need to get these issues sorted.

I want a 360 but that failure rate is pretty scary! Even with the extended warranty, you still have to wait ages for the repair correct?

Will MS improve the consoles any time soon?

The UPS guy that picked up my 360 on Friday says around 1 week turnaround.

When mine died a few months ago, I called up M$ support and logged the call with them, they registered it against my serial number. I took the unit to PC world who first told me outright that I would have to send it back, another customer service person said they could check it online, 5 mins later they came back and just swapped it there and then, they said it had been flagged to be replaced. Well happy smile

I have had mine for 7 months with no problems, but I am very happy about the 3 year warranty.

Mine just went this morning. Half way round the Nurburgring on the time trial and it just froze and lights went red. Try and get hold of Microsoft tomorrow and hopefully get it back soon but what a bloody pain.

Turnaround is usually less than a week. They don't send you yours back repaired, they just send you a working one.

Incidentally, in the future, I would suggest people buy their consoles from somewhere like Amazon.de due to the fact Europe have a standard 2 year warranty, unlike rip off Britains one year warranty.
