What do i need for Xbox 360 Live?

I have had an xbox since they came out but am thiking of getting a 360 and getting all the 'live' kit to go with it.
Firstly, is it worth getting one with all the dreaded 3 lights problems, is it really that common.
What exactly do i need to get myself on Xbox live, obviously the Xbox 360, controller.
Do you have to buy a memory card to save any of your games or can you save them on the hard drive?
The headset i guess is an optional extra, but what else do i need in terms or cables, or wireless connection bits.
Had a look in 'Game' yesterday and they wanted 55 quid for the wireless netwrork adapter thingy, are there any alternatives?

Yes, fantastic bit of kit, there are a fair few that have had problems but as far as customer service goes they're brilliant. Had mine since day 1 and not had a 3 red light problem

if you buy a 360 premium (you'd be mad not to) you get everything you need assuming you already have a router with a free RJ45 slot (standard network jack a la your computer). If you'd rather run wireless you can buy a wireless doowhacky for the 360 as an extra. If the cable supplied (2m I think) isn't long enough and you don't want wireless a standard network cable will be fine.
You also need an xbox live gold subscription to get the most out of it, you often get a month free trial cards in games and with the xbox itself, but shell the 30-35 quid for a years membership and keep the cards for when it runs out in an emergency etc. Well worth it if you're into multiplayer stuff, which the 360 is fantastic for, just look at the following we've got for forza 2 and gears of war etc here. To summarise, just buy an xbox 360 premium, 1 years gold membership and you should be set if you have a router with a spare slot.

nope, everything saves on the hard disk including game saves, downloadable content, demo's from xbox live marketplace, and so on. Standard premium hard disk is 20GB.

you get a wired headset which is fine as part of the premium package, failing that I've got a spare you can have for a 5'er. Wireless ones are decent but not worth the hassle imo

You can get them a bit cheaper online, but I'd only bother with the official one to be honest

Forget halo 2, loads of people still playing it but as soon as you get your hands on some of the fab games that are out the wait for halo 3 will be more than occupied!

Will probably get set up on tuesday i thinkJust talking to a friend and he had a 3 month subscription that he hasn't used.
Tried to log on using my old xbox and the BT home hub i have but it just says can't connect due to technical issue, try later.
Would this be beacuse i am trying to use the BT hub? (cable goes from Xbox to ethernet port on home hub)
Not to worry too much if thats the problem, as i said, will get the new xbox in the week.

If you have your 360 close to your pc just plug it into the back of that. It means you have to have your PC online to play XBL but thats no big deal. It comes with a 5 metre ethernet cable and i have no connection problems using this set up (touch wood). Also i would not be put off with the red ring of death, this is why microsoft have extended their warranty agreements.
