What is my course of action now, bought it in December last year, so still under waranty, can I just take it back were I bought it, or do I need to contact Mircosoft?

Manufacturer warranty, not retailer. Most retailers will exchange within 28 days or so, but afterwards you are on your own.

Microsoft want me to send mine off, but 4/5/6 without it - no chance. For the inconvenience I was offered 1 month free of XBL.

Just take it back to where you bought it from, you get 1yr standard warranty and if it's faulty (as it is) you should be able to get it swapped over. Outside of 1yr then deal with MS but whatever you do make sure if you have a premium xbox that you take the hard drive off and don't return it (just exchange the box itself) - any downloaded xbl games will cease to work offline but you'll still have your profile and all game saves.

They let me keep the hard drive - the second time!!! (Admittably I did'nt ask the first time I returned a 360)

It is a bit gay when you have a hard drive that does not 'match' your 360 - downloaded content (e.g. car packs on PGR3) are only available when you're connected to the internet

I kind of wish I'd played dumb and told them it was a core on premium one and just swapped the box, oh well at least I have an excuse to tell the gf why I'm on it all the time now smile

There's a 3 year free repair service on the 3 red light problem with the 360. Just phone up there customer service line and they'll sort it without any hasstle. They are also refunding any charges that they made to anyone who had to pay for the 3 light fault.

this is true, but you also have to wait min of 4 weeks to get your console back frown if you're still within your years warranty, you can just take it back to the shop you bought it from and they will replace it

Yeah, the same that you'd get when you buy any new product. smile
