can anyone comment on how good a PS3 is at upsacaling a standard def DVD?
I gather since v 1.80 of the firmware, the unit offers this.

looks great. somewhere between DVD and Bluray. Certainly better than 'normal' dvd's through my telly (42" 1080i)

Yup - wot Alt said smile

One of the thing I was most impressed with was how good 'normal' DVDs look. You'd swear some stuff (especially more recent titles) were HD!

Upscalling is very good on 1.9 apparently as good as some Denon upscalling DVD players yikes

However there is *apparently* a bug (small bug?) in the PAL upscaling code which shows itself now and then but I haven't noticed it myself, but I haven't watched a great many DVD's on my PS3 yet, but my PS3 is connected to a 720p projector with about a 6ft image.

If you look on AVForums somewhere there is a thread that mentions it...

I have problems with AVForumns... when I go in it takes ages to come back out again.

Cheers for info guys. PS3 firmly on the list now. Assume firmware upgrade is a simple enough task?

Not bad. I like 'traditional' shopping for bigger items, just in case theres a problem. Recently bought a stereo from ebay which needed fixing & was such a fag wrapping & shipping back.
