Forgive me for being really late to that party, but Ive just started playing this as it was very cheap.

Feck me, I thought FEAR was scary and made me jump. This really does scare the shit out of you.

Loving it, even if I am getting creamed on 2nd hardest setting.

Anyone else enjoyed it ?

AS I recall switching between the torch and a gun was a joke so you had to hack the game to get a torch/gun combo going on, after that it was a good game.

the mod is called Duct Tape. It adds a mini-mag to the machine gun, shotgun and I belive the plasma rifle. It doesn't touch the pistol so the early sections of the game are still 'creepy'.

I thought both it and the expansion pack, were quite good... but not scary. It just spawns enemies behind you rather than giving a storyline that also scares the crap out of you... like FEAR.

So good on shock, poor on scare IMHO. Still a good play though. As is Quake 4 BTW.

I agree with TheLearner - I had very mixed feelings about Doom 3. Initially, I found the atmosphere to be suitably creepy, causing prolific use of quicksave. However, after the first few scripted 'scare moments' (ie press button; wall behind opens to release baddie) it became old very quickly. I seem to recall the expansion pack being a bit more varied, but nothing really stands out in my mind about it.

Overall, I found Doom 3 to be an entertaining diversion for a few hours, but it felt more like an extended tech demo than a fully realised and developed game. That's not, of course, to detract from the fantastic technical achievements with the graphics engine. If you want to try some other 'creepy' FPS games, I would recommend FEAR, the System Shock games, STALKER, or Bioshock.

the duck tape mod as mentioned above is preety worthwhile.

Alos i downloaded a small mod to impove the sounds of the guns with something more similar to the original doom sounds.
All of the doom3 weapon sounds are preety weedy.

there is alos an expansion pack for doom3 that was not bad

errm...
I think the torch and gun thing was to make you crap yourself more..... those of you who "modded" the duct tape in obviously missed that one...either you can use the torch and see whats gonna kill you or you can use the gun and hope for the best. I know its hardly realistic but if its realism you want why why hwy are you playing DOOM?

I think the bit with the bathroom mirror was the creepiest bit...that and the baby noses made by the baddies later on.

The thing is there is a fine line between fun and frustrating. I like to play FPS games on the hardest difficulty, but with Doom3 that was just a waste of time, it wasn't fun it was just a case of working out where the bad guy would spawn and making sure you had your gun equipped, then retry, retry, retry, ad nauseum.

I was quite dissappointed with Doom3. I felt that it was walk into a room, lights go off then the monsters came. Kill them all and move on to the next.

I found FEAR to be much more atmospheric. There is a point where you turn to go down a ladder and in the tiny cut scene you have the child right there. I nearly shat me self.

F.E.A.R was great - the bit where the little girl appears in the lift next to you, or the bit at the end where she comes towards you like a scene out of "The Ring". Scary stuff!

I know its not FEAR, but its a fair bit older. For a shoot to kill, blast everything bit of fun it hits the spot.

I think the duct tape mod kind of takes away the panic factor.

Like I said, it was cheap and Im enjoying it on the hardest setting.

I loved it and deliberately played it at night in the dark to increase the 'scaryness'. I had both Doom 3 and resurrection of evil on the Xbox and thought it played well, although te story was weak.
