How do you lot play scary games?
Discussion
I confess to an inability to play FPS games with the creep factor, like FEAR, Doom 3, or Resident Evil, or that crime game where you play a CSI on the run.
Heck, the first time I came across a beserker in Gears Of War I flipped so bad I had to turn the game off and come back to it the next day after psyching myself up!
Now I've just gone and bought Bioshock for the PC, thanks to the hype, and what do I find? A game with a creep factor and eerie sounds and freaks appearing out of nowhere!
Maybe it's my imagination, or maybe it's the good spec of my gaming setup and sound system, but I find these games so immersive that when something jumps out of the wall my heart literally skips a beat and I jump out of my chair, thankful that my ticker was still beating! When I enter a territory and you hear all those dodgy sounds around you and ghost-like voices, I become paralysed with fear, backtrack to a corner where I can see everything, and then eventually turn the game off!!!!
I am a good hack at games where humans are the target, and pretty nifty when playing CS online. Throw in any creepiness though, and I find it VERY hard to play.
Don't you guys get this? Or am I just a wimp? Is it the whole idea, and part of the fun? How do you detach yourselves from the fantasy of the game and the reality of how much the suspense can alter your heart rate?
No problem with horror movies or ghost rides or haunted houses BTW. It's just these stupid games!!!

agree with you. I now its sad but I also get a bit jumpy with games like doom. but not GOW. Not played Bioshock apart from 5 mins with the demo but that looks like a shit you up game.
I'm fine with movies, I have no problems with, but I do get into games more and jump out my skin sometimes

t I knowI tend to play with headphones on for that total immersion.Oh, and to avoid having to compete with the tv.
Trouble is, one of my dogs always sits under my desk whilst Im on the pc, number of times Ive been creeping around in a game and the bugger has moved and touched my leg !!!!!!
FEAR is def a game to get you going though.

I get the occasionally jump when playing some of the games when you're not expecting something, but one other thing that really got me was the realistic feeling of being mega high up when playing crackdown when you're scaling or standing on top of the likes of the agency tower, the sound of the wind definitely adds to that feeling and I could feel myself filling my bags when standing near the edge

It's all part of it in my opinion and I should imagine any of the developers of these games would see it as a success that people are scared or at least a little bit jumpy while playing them. They always scare me, but not to the point that I have to tun them off... not very often anyway.
The scariest game I have ever played is Alien V Predator on the PC. You can play as a Marine and can have either the torch on or the alien detector..... when it starts beeping quicker and quicker with the lights off your heart rate rises and when the buggers drop down on you, your heart is beating quicker than a teenager watching the Playboy channel freeview with 10 seconds left!
Out of all the scary games, this one still freaks me out. I showed it to a friend of mine last night and he jumped back about a foot.
