I used to play the original Team Fortress Classic back in the days ... Always played as sniper and became one of the best in the UK at one point! 
TF2 has been in development for years - Valve made many promises as to a release date, but the game was always pushed back. I'll have to download it now it is out!

I used to play qwtf (it was great) and was also a damn good sniper... until everyone else got ADSL and I still had a modem
I remember when Half Life came out the reason I was originally interested in it was that it would ship with team fortress 2. That never happened... but over time I realised Half Life was going to be the best of the next gen of FPS games. I pretended to be ill and skipped school so I could buy it. (naughty).
Is it avialbe to buy in shops? I would do that.
As an aside... I currently have a 3 GhZ pentium with 512Mb ram and an ATI X600 graphics card. games are starting to chug a bit so I am looking at boosting the ram to 1 gig and getting a better gfx card. What should I buy (can be ati express) for less than 100 quid? Ta!

the online version of quake 1
tf was a mod for quake 1/quakeworld and it was great. TFC was really awful compared to it, I thought. much slower etc. Sadly most people think TFC was the first TF mod TF for quakeworld was really the first class based FPS game so it has inspired many great games (battlefield etc).
i tried many of the tf mods after the original TF but never got the gameplay back. I think it was probably a time/place thing with qwtf for me though. there was a great community around it

Q1 was a bit cool. I remember making maps for it, silly ones, with super fast lifts and just really mad gameplay, and then playing multiplayer on LAN with a few mates. Those 4 day LAN parties going from ~ midday to 6am then 6hrs sleep and eating junk food types qw = quake world

Unfortunately even dialup back then was really crap and expensive (PAYG vs the 0800 ones that came along)... so it was only really the Uni people on Janet that were doing really well out of Q1 at the time

Team Fortress 2 is a beta but it must be about 98% complete as the beta is faultless.

You have to pre-order the orange box that contains all of the half life 2 series, portal and Team Fortress 2 then you can get the beta.
Team Fortress 2 is a beta but it must be about 98% complete as the beta is faultless.
