Nintend Wii Chipping,

Has anyone done this?

how easy is it? i would of thought that with the sd card and usb ports on the console it would be quite simple,

ive chipped my Nintendo DS works great so simple.

I have a chipped US unit. Not done via USB or SD but with a soldered in chip (actually these methods of attack aren't that easy, for any machine, since USB or SD doesn't cause the machine to automatically run 3rd party software). Plays imports and CDR/DVDR games no problem.

how hard/expensive is it?

My DS is chipped, well called chipped but its actualy just got a modified game cartridge with an SD slot in it, download, software, games ebooks music videos Emulators onto the sd card and pop it in and they all work perfectly even multiplayer

was hoping it would be this easy for the wii =D

Lukcily a colleague who has better soldering skills than me did it for me. There is also the potential for banning/crippling machines on Wii if you have it connected online.

I also have the DS things too (R4) - probably the easiest home-mod around.

Updates sent through wifi can brick your wii if it has been modded, dont understand why people do this, pay for the game, play it. your only hurting the games industry. Music on the other hand, thats fair game!

In some respects, if I needed a modchip to boot say... Linux on the Wii. Then I'd fit the modchip (ikkle, quite machine, Wifi enabled, playing AVI's and stuff under the telly? You betcha) but just to rip off games... nah.

Then don't buy it. That's the way the world works. You don't go and steal a Ferrari because it costs too much for a daily driver and you'll only use it at weekends.

I have had a look at this. Looks really easy to do, as simple micro controller on a simple PCB with 4 solder points onto the Wii PCB. Software updates are then written via CD.

Games are easy to get and easy to burn.

I haven't got around doing it yet as not enough stuff out there yet that I want. I will be doing mine and a few others soon.

I would be interested if I can get it to stream movies wirelessly from my PC upstairs with the right software.

Think of it in terms of a cinema ticket then, £8 buys you a couple of hours of entertainment there, whereas you pay 5 times that amount and generally get 5 times the entertainment value from a game...
