Looks like Best Buy, a major US electronics store, might be about to cut the price of the PS3 to $399 (About £200), I'd be tempted at that sort of price point, but I'm sure it won't ever happen over here...

It would be quite good for the consumer if Sony start getting itchy about PS3 volumes (and by association Blu-ray adoption) and goad Microsoft into a price war.
I'm not necessarily sure they'd be keen to do so though, what with MS seemingly having their cost-cut "second generation" X360, Falcon, well underway.
There are also two possible price fights here. One is the hardware cost, and breaking into the "in homes for Christmas" market. Doubt we'll see it this year, but you never know.
The other, potentially more interesting one, is the, "online play is going to cost you £x and microcontent is going to cost you £y" comparison. I reckon XBox Live has some quite big margins currently - Sony would do well to start talking about the lifetime costs of a PS3 compared to an X360+HD-DVD+XBLive bundle.

This would seem to make sense to me, with online content and online play being the things that bring home the extra money? Use the system as (even more of) a loss leader and make the money on the fact the user pays for games, blue-ray discs, online play and content.
