Nintendo Wii - worth the cash?

Firstly, I'm not a huge console fan, very happy with the odd game of CounterStrike on the PC now and then. And no, I don't want an X-Box or PS3 ever.
However, the missus (strange) is punting the idea of getting a Wii for Christmas. Now I love 'puter games, I like the idea that anyone can get stuck in with a Wii. Do they have any enduring lastability or is it going to collect dust after 1st Jan?
Also, any news on the Star Wars lightsabre game? If it's available, forget all the above, I'm getting one.

YES!!!!!!! Bought one a couple of weeks ago as a joint birthday pressie (MOH is an avid gamer - I'm not) and it's great.

I haven't really been into gaming for a long time, but having played the Wii quite a few times now (264 on bowling so far), I'm going to get one at Christmas as a joint present for me and my girlfriend.
The reasons we're waiting:
No money at the moment
No space to play it at the moment
Hoping they'll either drop the price (unlikely) or add DVD playing capabilities (also unlikely, but less so)
There are so many games coming out which I like the look of. I was tempted to get a 360/PS3, but I'm rubbish at all these serious games, and all the games just seem to be getting harder, whereas the Wii takes a new spin on things.

Don't see the point of them. The Wii is just for pasty skinned, lazy people who can't be arsed to go outside, get some proper fresh air and pick up a real tennis racket.
The only game I would like to play on the Wii is 'see how far you can throw the Wii box out of the living room window' at your friends house before doing something more interesting instead.

Wii've got one (see what I did there?).
It's great for the Mrs and the Nipper, but most of the games are minigame compilations.
The Tennis doesn't always do what you tell it, and it's too easy to cheat at the bowling (if you're 7yrs old).
I've been very disappointed with it - it's a glorified gamecube. You only get one remote and one nunchuck. So if you want a 4player on Rabbits you need to buy 3xremotes at 3x£35 and 3xnunchucks at 3x£17. = an extra £150 outlay + game.
Rabbits is ace tho (we have it on PS2 and Wii would be great). Paper Mario is kinda fun. Harry Potter is OK.
Mario Party 8 only really works if there are a load of you there for the evening, and the minigames are a bit variable (ie most are pish).
Coming soon is Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 and Star Wars Lego The Complete Saga (which has the lightsabres).
The Wii graphics are rubbish and you can't download demos. There are no racing games and the controllers are gimicky and not great to use. I'd be getting an xbox360tbh.

Buy Wii Play/include it as part of a package as we did, and it includes the 2nd controller then buy a separate numchuck.

that was very silly on the Xbox.I didn't mean to upset anyone regarding X-Box/PS3. I get outside plenty (two gardens and a classic car has me outdoors in all weathers) but games are more fun in groups of friends/relatives/'er indoors.
I'm not interested in finding all the easter eggs in Halo 3 as it's likely to have me divorced before I'm married.
So basically, get an extra controller and go for the sports games. Cool.
As for Lego Star Wars, I like the sound of that already..

Well, I love mine. Spent three hours on Friday getting to pro level on the bowling. My two boys love it too...

I've found some games better than others (rent them through Lovefilm.com) - Sonic & The Magic Rings was great, GT Pro racing not so great, current favourite with all of us is Second Opinion, where you become a top-notch surgeon!

Because it's a glorified Gamecube And I was annoyed when I downloaded Mario Kart 64 thinking we could have multiplayer on our expensive new Wii controllers.
Oh no.
You need to go out and buy special controllers for some of the retro games.
I'll give lovefilm a try tho
