my xbox 360 has now given me the red lights which indicates it needs to be sent off for repair, but if it still under 1 year and i have the recept does the shop not have to replace it under sales of goods.

it had started to play once i bought and played halo 3.

The obligation is on the shop, yes, but it's not to replace it. They are entitled to send it away to the manufacturer for repair, if they choose.

Of course, some retailers go above and beyond that obligation - but that's by their choice, not something you can force them to do.

Opening a can of worms quite possibly here, and i guess from your user name that this may be your bread and butter, but doesnt the sale of goods act mean you dont have to accept a repair, you can hold out for a new unit? i'd expect a new console to reasonably last 12mths, no problem

I've had no problems taking mine back and I've had to do it twice now.

Some places will even let you upgrade to the elite if you pay the extra £50 wink

Although the new premium consoles have the HDMI out on them now too, so the only thing going for the elite is the massive Hard Drive...

I bought mine from play, after 9 months its showed th same error but play made me go to Microsoft. I have a couple of weeks off and wanted to play PGR4 so i bought a 'spare', just the basic on. I got it home, it lasted 20 seconds from brand new to the red light error happening. That one is definitely goingback to the shop for a replacement straight away....i cant beleive how unreliable they are.

Yep, they have kept the same motherboard in the elite so its prone to suffering the same fate as the 360.

Although an edit to say that the elite does have a different heat sink and larger fans so its supposedly less likely to happen
