Good grief! Why can you STILL not get hold of a Wii?

One would have thoguht that after a year, Nintendo might have pulled their fingers out and got the Wii into shops in good supply. I understand it's a popular console, but that really is a ridiculous situation.
Ah well, I'll wait I guess. I'm not paying a £30 eBay premium for it.
On a related point, I happened to go into PC World and after being told there were no Wiis, I noticed they were doing the 60 GB PS3 with 2 games for £350. Now that is one heck of a price drop. Still expensive though...

Nothing and I mean, nothing, has sold like the Wii. Our local Gamestation can not get stock in for love nor money; it's still pre-order and we'll phone when the next batch come in.Some places do have stock; it's worth poking your nose in to the oddbod areas... Toys R' US for example, Woolworths and yes; a stock check with the purveyors of the laminated book of dreams would be a good plan.

Game in question is Star Wars: Force Unleashed
You play Darth Vader's apprentice, but it's not due out until at least April next year. I think you can swing the lightsabers around a bit in Lego Star Wars using the wiimote, but it will be nowhere near as good as the system they're putting in for Force Unleashed.

I've always had that suspicion. It uses tried and tested technology thats in plentiful supply. They should be churning them out like cars and washing machines. Witchfinder said:

I've had the same thought, on the basis that it's not going to get any easier to get them as Christmas approaches and I'm sure we can all remember the number of people desperately running around to get one in the week or two before the big day....... unless, of course, Nintendo are carefully stage-managing things to flush out all the speculators and panic buyers now, and holding back stock to turn the taps on full blast in the run up to Christmas.
It seems odd that they'd be planning a new bundle (this Play and Learn thing) while the regular one is in scarce supply.

I would say that it is a combination of things:
1. Sales of the Wii are way higher that Nintendo originally even dreamed about, explaining the initial shortages.
2. Marketing - Viral marketing - There is STILL loads of 'talk' about the Wii, mostly good!
3. Marketing - Market segment - Very clever here, partly down to pricing, partly down to selection of games available - The Wii is not being marketed as a competitor to 360/PS3, rather (very cleverly, some would argue!) as a complementary console offering something different.
4. It could even be speculated that supply is being kept artificially lower than could actually be supplied, to keep up a general market demand - If people see these as still selling-out, then they must be popular, then they will want to get on the band-wagon??
