You're probably thinking of the elite that has already arrived. Not much more reliable apparently, but certainly quieter.
No idea who cooked up this slim idea though.
Thanks, probably heard it from a mate down the pub. In that case I can go ahead and get one sooner rather than later. Time for a TV upgrade as well I think. No idea who cooked up this slim idea though.

are they really quieter? I've only seen elites running so I've not heard the premium/cores but I thought the elites made a right racket. I dread to think how noisy the others areNo idea who cooked up this slim idea though.
Microsoft are slowly changing bits of the XBox over to 65nm, which runs cooler and consumes less power.
You can already get some with the cooler CPU, however its the graphics chip which runs really hot, and that's not scheduled until next year IIRC.
They're currently on a costcutting drive and there's a possibility that a revised console may be in the offing at some point.
With regards to "quiet", it's very subjective - I've got a Premium with the upgraded heatsink and later DVD drive which I've been told is one of the quieter options, but I still think it makes an absolute bloody racket.
(To be totally fair, it's not much louder than a cheap all-in-one DVD player/surround amp combination, but I'm used to custom build PCs which are in proper forget-it's-on territory.)

The newer one is definately quieter fan wise, and when it's just sat there on the menu screen it's pretty quiet, but the DVD drive is just as noisy as ever!
Same thing with mine. The fan noise by itself is tolerable, considering it's quiet enough to drown out with the sound of a 911 thumping its way round the Nurburgring.
The DVD drive is awful though! Any quiet moment in a game is filled with whirring and grinding. This is if anything worse because while fans and heatsinks can be chopped around the instant the warranty ends, the XBox DVD drive is (AFAIK) tied into the BIOS and copy protection system, so you're stuck with it.
Not an XBox360 but it is new and slimline
