PS3 Unreliable?

Right now, I'm not a happy bunny.
I bought a PS3 in August this year, after about 6 weeks it packed up, only remaining on long enough for me to copy the saved games. Sony, to their credit, replaced it next day. Now a month later, that one has packed up, with no output signal and no way to get the saved game data off.
Sony recommended putting the hard drive in a friends PS3 and copying the data. I decided to wait for the courier today and insert the drive in the new device. However, it simply came up with a message that the hard drive MUST be formatted.
So, I'm now on my 3rd PS3 in as many months and the hours I spent recently on Ridge Racer completely gone. I've lost confidence with it now. Need to see if I can use a Compact Flash card to automatically store the save game data rather than the hard drive.

Yeah, I'll bet there are a fair number that are as bad as the 360s, but it hasn't garnered anywhere near the amount of publicity.
To Sony's credit though they seem to be doing a better job of turning them around, replacing them inside 24hours is something you'd only dream of getting with Microsoft.
Is tricky though when you lose confidence in something like that.

I'm writing this reply from the comfort of my ps3, its taking ages but yeah. I guess the reason for two faulty ps3's could be down to the fact that they replace the faulty ones with older faulty ones they refurbished... Seems odd why they'd do that, aside from the obvious cost reason, but I got through about 4 or 5 ps2's that way, then got tired of it and just bought a new one when the price dropped, that was 3 years ago and it still works, as does this one, which is less than can be said for my brother's paperweight 360!
Hey Neema, you didnt write all that on the control pad did you ?? Fair play if you did, when I first got the PS3 I was struggling with the control pad but I eventually got myself a £5 USB keyboard from PC World which works a treat, some things require the use of the controller (only for the x button) but its a hell of a lot easier and for the sake of a fiver !!
Guess I've been unlucky then. I've got 3 360's ( 2 premium's and an elite ), one downstairs, one upstairs and one at the missus' house. Never had a problem with any of them, aside of the very occasional quirkyness with the cd drive on my original premium which was bought when they were first released.
I bought my PS3 not long after they were released (best paperweight ever). When it arrived it was dead. No problem I thought, obviously been bashed in transit or something. Got it replaced, and it's since been back for the same problem as the OP describes. Thankfully I've never bothered playing it for more than a few minutes, and haven't much intention of playing it in the near future as there's not enough games I like out, so any lost game data I wasn't bothered about.
Suppose I've just been unlucky, with the amount of gadgetry crammed inside the consoles these days it's no wonder the odd one or two fall over. Certainly don't seem to be anywhere near the 360's level of failure rates, but then the console itself isn't a patch on the 360 imo. I hope next year will see me reviving my PS3 from the inch of proverbial dust it lies beneath, as more games worth playing start to emerge, but for me the 360 represents the much better gaming experience, mainly because I play online 90% of the time.

The failure rate for the PS3 and the Wii is less than 1%, the failure rate of the X360 is 33%. If you have a broken PS3 thn you are really unlucky.
I'd like to know where you got those figures from. I suspect from a mate who "knows" I don't know anyone with a 360 which has broken and that is about 10 people.Tycho said:

My comrades and I are seeing about a 50% failure rate.Lots of red lights of death, one lad is on his 3rd. One of them only worked twice.
I had a DVD drive death. My Bother in Law had a DVD drive on the way out but luckily got the 3 red lights first.
However, out of the 3 people I know with a PS3, 2 of them have a 360 as well which they use almost exclusively. The other is buying one.
My home 360 died the other day after about 1.5yrs use, i have another console though which hasnt RROD'd yet. On the plus side, i get a free gold-subscription thrown in for my inconvenience.
