What FPS game?

Been playing games for nearly 25 years, but havent really played much in the last 5.

The one game I enjoyed FAR more than anything else, was Team Fortress Classic, a halflife mod.
And I preferred it over counterstrike, if that sheds any light on what Im after.

I enjoyed the team vs team capture the flag aspect hugely, and traditional sorts of weapons. The game wasnt tooo fast paced, and I quite liked the fact that one or two shots didnt mean you were dead. Not that I was crap, I wasnt, just preferred that type of game.

I dont especially like scifi, but perhaps Id enjoy a sci fi game, dunno.
Ive not done much game browsing, but there do seem to be quite a few sci-fi type releases over the years.

I suppose what Id like is to recapture the good old TFC days, but I have no idea what to buy, and no time to experiment with various games... What, ideally, do you guys think I should check out/buy?

Id be playing TFC now, if it wasnt for the fact that the servers dried up years ago.

Buy the orange box on your 360 Bob and play Team Fortress 2, imagine Team Fortress Classic with Pixar doing the graphics and you're about there.

Edit: Of course you could just buy it on your PC too.

Awesome. So before I abandon all work to run out and buy myself a copy this afternoon, which to go for, pc or xbox

I dont really like console shooters, the precision just isnt there with the twiddley thumbsticks. The mouse lets your character be as invincible as you are good. Im running a 24 inch monitor at 1980 x 1200 or so (brand new quad core) with only a 256 meg graphics card, lemme check... NVIDEA GeForce 8600 by the looks of it, 256mb iirc... Not much time to do some reading before the shops close, are there any benefits of buying one over the other?

Ive been out of the loop so long, I dont know much about PC power vs graphical requirements, but I assume Id be able to bump down the screen res from 1980 x 1200, or would I need to?

Any help gratefully received
PS, did you play TFC 1.4 onwards yourself, or not?

I played my fair share of Team Fortress classic yeah, where the Steve Evil moniker got started, needed to differentiate myself from all the other Steves running around.

I'd say go for the PC version then, it's all based on the Half Life 2 Source engine, so your machine sounds more than capable of running it and you won't exactly be short of people to play against either.

Edit: Oh and you won't even need to leave the house, just download Steam and buy the package from here:

It will stream direct down to your hard drive and you don't need to brave the peasants at your local shopping emporium.

Battlefield 2 on the 360 is great.

what could be better than slapping a chunk of C4 on the front of a Hummvee and bailing out 50yds before a load of the enemy and pushing the button as it trundles up to them?

I used to play BF2 on the PC and would recommend it. Awesome game, just shame I've been band

After several more hours of play, Ive deleted my previous comments (which were not toooo far from being biased nostalgic drivel) and re-comment.

TF2 is not TFC.
To the hardcore fan, it just isnt the same game.
But it is Very Much TF (Team Fortress) so its all good then

TF2 is brilliant! Excellent fun, original maps are there, and much of the playing style of each character is 'more or less' the same as in the original, ie many of the elements which made the first game so much fun.

Id pay the orange box price for this game alone.

TF2 is way more like QWTF than TFC. I hated TFC (because it was much slower than QWTF) but love TF2. It captures the spirit of QWTF perfectly.

TFC was just SO uniquely/differently balanced though, compared to just about any other FPS game.

TF2 is more evenly balanced, which is great for the noobs/average players I suppose. Looking back, TFC wasnt popular, it had more of a minority cult following, in fact Id go so far as to say it was almost underground compared to Counter Strike which everyone else seemed to be playing at the time.

TFC, although slower, was almost like a lightening fast strategy game, in that if you were thinking on your feet and were good enough, you could beat any opponent, any class, playing literally any other class with no exceptions. A blinding scout could kill an average HW, which made the game so much fun.

TF2 doesnt quite seem to offer the same level of "hours played = ability to own" imho.

(disclaimer: The strongly opinionated tone is due to the fact that I was a bit of a tfc addict/nut)
