Do you have a 360 HD-DVD?

I'm thinking of getting one of the external HD-DVD drives for my 360. Now does the 360 make loads of noise when it's playing HD discs like it does when it's running game disks? Or is it as quiet as when it's not running a game disk and is just switched on?

You can pick one up for around £99 now and microsofts website is allowing you to claim 5 HD-DVD's with the downloadable form:

http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/hd-dvd/default.htm

http://www.game.co.uk/Xbox360/Hardware/Accessory/~...

Hope you can help? Cheers, D4V KC driving

Its quieter, no disk noise but you stioll have fan noise.

BTW stand alone players have been down to $99 in the US and are $200 or so , one day thta may even hit the rest of the world...

No disc noise but the fan noise is still there??

So its the same level of noise as running a standard DVD in the Xbox??

I'd be inclined to say that the HD-DVD drive is actually quieter than the xbox itself...

I rather like ours... although I need to get all of my HD-DVD's back from those that have borrowed them!!

I had one, but sold it when it dawned on me that I got it as a bit of a fad and that I don't actually watch a lot of films rofl

As for the noise, the Xbox makes the same amount of noise as when you are on the dashboard. I think what was meant with the quiter than playing a game comment, is that, and certainly on mine, when I whack a game on, the Xbox sounds like it wants to take off smile

Just as noisy so not really usable, TBH I think blu-ray is better not really seen any HD-DVD only titles where's there are loads of BR ones, plus the players are fairly inexpensive, the PS3 is much quieter too.

Other than the 360 and a few players that'll play both formats it's all been a bit quiet on the HD-DVD front.

Personally I think the only reason there's this 'format war' is to make the general public hold off from buying either thus they'll buy their HD content online which is what people like MS would prefer but like myself find awful.

Personally I think the noise is fine - perfectly acceptable.

Performance wise - image quality is great, sound quality is missing Dolby TRU HD, which isn't a problem if your amplifier doesn't support that. There are problems though - when the camera is panning images show significant "glitches" which I find most intrusive.

It is a cheap route into HD movies, and they really do look that much better than SD DVD does. But after 10 minutes you just get used to it and accept it as the norm.

I'd save my money for a "real" HD DVD player, or BluRay player, whichever side of the format war you think is going to win. For me the fact I can buy region 1 HD DVDs from the states much cheaper and much earlier than the UK release is very nice - BluRay has no such advantage.

edit to add:

I would be astonished if any game comes out on HD DVD on Xbox360.

BR is region free though, presumably you'd not be able to play a US HD-DVD film on a UK 360 so I'd argue that it's that format that has the advantage of imported titles.

Your HUGELY mistaken there.

Bluray is region coded. Some BR disks aer region free but HD DVD doesnt have region coding in the spec.

Bluray is NOT region free. Bluray also has BD+ which can remove a whole ton of your rights under AACS , it remvoes tyour rights to a managed copy, can make disks time limited, can revoke a players rights to play disks etc.

Bluray is not in the consumers intrests, which is specificaly why some studios want to support it.

Sony have recently said that Bluray is at best at a stalemate with HD DVD - and theres equall studios on board each format now.

Theres no advantage to the consumer with Bluray, it costs more and is more restrictive, why support it?

I prefer BR as there's a lot more media available for it, a platform is only as good as its' software, it also has twice the capacity of HDDVD which is better for 1080P with HD surround, I concede that BR is region protected (just googled it, had been told otherwise) but my player is chipped so it's no worse than DVD in that respect.

Once a format 'wins' all media will be on that, I'm on the fence still but side with HD DVD as its better for the consumer. Stupid to have this format war anyhow (usualy this is sorted before a product gets into customer hands).

As for capacity,HD DVD is currently 30gig vs 50gig (very few BR diska are 50gig tho) theres many long movies with HD sound on HD DVD already, the capacity (and the slightly lower bitrate) isnt a real issue, and if it is HD DVD have ratified 51gb 3 layer disks which will work in all existing players anyhow.

Your player may be chiped , but that will only be for DVD's, it wont remove region coding on BR disks.

Pass I've not tried it, it's a Pioneer DV-LX50 BTW.

Still I maintain that BR is better as there's a lot more media for it which at the end of the day is all that counts.

I don't want a format war either as I hate the idea of that pay per view crap over the internet which will be probably forced upon us in the near future if these new HD formats fail.

Just to add - you can indeed play US (region 1) HD DVDs on a uk player.

That's the killer advantage for me, but I'll acknowledge it won't win the "war". Getting it first for less money is never a bad thing!

No you cant! There is no such thing as a US region 1 HD DVD :P

HD DVD's dont have any region code, at all.

And a whole load of BR movies will be out on HD DVD somewhere in the world too.

I personaly HATE region coding, still affects me even though I have region free players..

Sorry Rob, you are right of course, but it's really semantics - stuff comes out first over there and is cheaper but is not region locked. But since you can't buy it here it might as well be!

BluRay on the other hand...

I have both.

Personally, I consider the PS3 to be a superior HD film player. No panning glitches and (IMO) better visual clarity, but I acknowledge it might just be me and my perception. No region free though.

The HD-DVD is indeed a cheaper way in. Big advantage is that it's region free. Transformers is currently only available on HD-DVD and it's truly stunning! minimal glitching (which suggests that it may even be resolved in the future) and a real visual feast. I've had it for over a month now, the Matrix Box set since the summer and so getting the films early is justification enough.

If a movie's available on both formats, I'd go BR. But I wouldn't want to miss out on it if it were a HD-DVD only title.

What do you mean by glitching, 3:2 pulldown?

The glitching I see is probably best described as vertical "slices" when a panning shot is shown - you get vertical lines where the image doesn't properly line up.

Plasmas in my experience are never that good at showing panning anyway - but with the Xbox HD DVD it seems to be worse.

Sounds like its a 30/60fps 3:2 pulldown issue.

The next 360 update will enable 1080/24 I think, tho most TV's cant cope with that so far. Also doesnt sound like your TV can turn 1080/30 (or whatever) into 24.
