Right first off bear in mind my game playing history, mostly pc, and what console playing there has been was a ps1 with GT1 (great game) Gt2 (felt like GT1 with poorer graphics) and then an xbox, forza and the need for speed series on xbox contributed greatly to my insomnia.

All this time you kind of watch the GT series, GT3 looked great, GT4 even better.

So when I get the ps3 GT5 looks like a natural progression, so you look around and find it's ages off general release, but the developers have been kind enough to offer a free demo in the PS shop!

After the long download you get in to playing it.............What a load of pants!!!!

Graphics are good, the car graphics aren't as good as forza, but the background is far more advanced, however although thats lovely it's the car I spend most of my time looking at. The game play is shocking! Forza was relatively accurate, I mean it's a game but pretty realistic, this is rubbish, turn in to a corner and the car virtually stops, plus the controls are just plain daft, there are a set of perfectly good corner buttons going spare so where do they put accelerator and brake? thats right one of the thumbsticks! so your steering with one and accelerating with the other, more like controlling a bloomin helicopter! Of course you can use the x button if you want but then you get hand cramp.

Also if the demo is anything to go by the only cars that are even slightly fun to drive are the top of the range ones, and the low spec ones you have to go through to get there are just painful!

Also what is going on with the car choice? R32 gtr? Celica GT4 1995? Suzuki Cappucino? Where are the new cars? Surely an r34, new shape celica, copen would have been better? These cars were in GT1!!!

I got used to the controls so much that forza with triggers caused me problems for an hour or so.'

Having just been handed a PS2 with GT4 (A lucky git of a friend has got a PS3 free with a very big tv....the least he could do was give me his PS2), anyway the controller is terrible compared to the xbox ones. Triggers for throttle and brake are the only way forward. Using a mushroom thing would feel so unstable!.... (unless you put the controller down and use thumb and finger to control the mushroom.... ummmm)

You're not playing GT5, you're playing GT:HD - its a crap 'graphics demo'.

Get a jap account and get GT5:P from the japanese shop - its also free, and much much more playable.

I never had a problem with having the throttle and brake on the right thumbstick on GT4. I quite like it there as it allows finer control than with the buttons, even though the X button is pressure sensitive. Just a matter of getting used to it I think.

Have to agree on this one. I cut my teeth on the PS1 & 2 and all iterations of the GT series. Earlier this year I took the plunge on an Xbox360 (as I considered that the price of the PS3 was rather steep, combined with no games of interest in the forseeable future). I find the trigger controls vastly superior for acceleration and braking, much easier to modulate than buttons or thumbsticks. I was rather hoping that Sony would have taken this on board for titles such as GT5.

I swapped the controls over to use the throttles on the back of the pad, L2 and R2 are now like the XBox triggers and I found them fine for GT:HD, so Sony have taken that onboard.

As has already been said you are not playing GT5 but GT:HD, which uses a physics engine derived from GT4, The GT5 Prologue Demo on the Japanese PSN has the new GT5 'Professional' physics mode.

As for the cars nbot looking as good as Forza 2, have you got your PS3 connected via composite? The GT models are sooo much better than Forza 2, just look at the older Evo or the Fezza on the demo.

Regarding the controls, lots of people do like using the triggers for accel/ brake, but personally I prefer using the buttons as I don't like having to brake and steer with the same hand nuts plus it means my grip isn't as tight.

The buttons are analogue but take a bit of practice, however they don't seem as progressive as the ones on my PS2 controller frown

How do I sign up for a jap account then? Is it easy? Assume the gt5 demo will run on my machine?

I retract my statement pending trying gt5. However I can't believe anyone would release this HD game, it would put me off buying gt5.

I really don't see why, I thought it was great fun when you start playing with the less grippy tyres.

The only thing that got on my tits was the woeful tyre squeel.

Having played the GT:HD demo I have to say I do agree that compared to Forza 2 the handling is rubbish. However as pointed out several times, GT: HD demo is just the physics model from GT4 in a pretty frock 9i have to say that in HD I think it is better looking than Forza 2.

Whilst Forza 2 does look superb...

In my opinion GT:HD looks better....

Whilst the full on "Gran Turismo 5 - Prologue" demo looks simply jaw dropping...

(that really is an in game shot, more in high res here )

No contest in the graphics department, Forza is pretty, but nowhere near the quality of GT5, however, I'm waiting to try the physics of GT5 before deciding to buying a PS3.

(And my wallet is really hoping it's crap hehe )

Yes that does look good.

I do hope GT5 plays better than this hd/4 thing. It just doesn't feel fluid at all!

I thought the car models and the metal effects used are better in GT5 but the backgrounds are a lot worse (low resolution texture, rubbish foliage). Were getting to the point were both games are acceptably real looking and spotting differences is getting down to irrelevant stuff like grass quality smile

GT3 on the PS2 was much more contollable using the thumsticks than the triggers. It made the controller far more analogue and sensitive - rather than the "on/off" of the triggers. If you imagine 12'o'clock as being WOT, you can just nudge the stick round to 10 or 2'o'clock to slightly reduce the speed - rather than slamming it straight back to 6'o'clock. Particularly useful when getting back on the power exiting a corner; you can control the increase in power far more smoothly by adjusting your inputs in a circular fashion than up and down inputs.
