New to Forza 2 - Tips?

Hi all, been playing Forza 2 for about 4 hours now. I'm going to join in with some online shenanigans once I've got used to driving the different types.
I've managed Gold in every proving ground race, but found myself upgrading the car so it was markedly faster than the competition (sometimes putting me a whole class higher than every other car).
This can't be the right approach... it's not very satisfying where you can give yourself a 5 second safety buffer in case of a crash, just because your car is twice as fast on the easy bits
So how do you lot play it in career mode?
Also how many extra points do you get for turning the assists off? I tried driving without TC or ABS but found the controls over sensitive and very frustrating. At the moment I am still using the suggested braking points while I learn the circuits

i have a cooper S with Kent Cams and seem to woopp some bum with it with ease. and i too keep the braking line on
when you get into the other racing classes they become more strict on the cars used, so soon you wont be able to be a hole class faster than the competition.
you get about 5% for no TC, 10% for no ABS but nothing for no SCM. the most bonus to be had is for difficulty and car rareity. i race without TC and SCM, but i leave the ABS on because without it i just can't race.
as for the tracks, go into career mode and free ride on all the tracks in a medium car (lotus elise) and learn the tracks there with no damage and no other cars.
oh and, slow in fast out.

Just use cars you win in races they are elligable for and dont waste money. Dont worry about being a class higher at the moment as races coming up (standard cars, series etc) are all harder as you are all the same.
Dont go online lol. Ive almost done 100% of career so just ventured on this week. I can post top 100 times on many races in career online I just get my ass kicked bigtime.

im going to plough on tonght. are you on Xbox Live?I have built a lightweight racing e type though, but I'm crap at driving it... needs setting up properly

I'd actually suggest starting racing online with slower cars, the racing tends to be tighter and more fun plus the cars are easier to drive, giving you a better chance of keeping up!

At the moment I'm mostly getting shunted off the track by my sister... who is getting frustratingly competent at head to head racing 
Spent a good hour learning the Nordschleife last night, cracking out 8.49 laps in an R8
Oh, and got a McLaren Mercedes SLR on the 'ring with the home cinema cranked up
Turn off all the assists except ABS in FWD, same with 4wd. Lairy big power RWD(speed 12) turn TC on.
Swich the braking lines off straight away as you'll never turn them off. It doesn't take long to learn a new track and use the outside car views to see what the back of the car is doing.

I also knocked up a setting calculator. The only thing it really doesn't work for are the porsche's, would need to make some more adjustments to the calculations for that. It's a little out of date, but will get you started - hen I first started using it, it knocked whole seconds off my time, depending on the track!

GAH!The PIT maneuver is a favourite race-winning strategy of mine. So is the "ohmibad!! I've just mashed the brakes instead of the gas and you hit me!!" and the "oh I say! That corner is tighter than I thought. Nevermind, I'll just use the side of your car to help me around. Oh what's that? You spun into the armco and now have red-everything? Ho hum!"
