I am looking for a new tower PC, about £1,000 mainly to play online games,

I already have screen / keyboard / mouse / amp / speakers etc. so just the tower unit required.

Don't need or want a flashy case with glowing neons.

Any ideas of what components or sources to look for?

How about the Dell XPS 720?

Or one from a UK PC builder?

Build it yourself?

Its really not hard and you will get to spec it exactly how you want, plus get more bang per buck if you shop sensibly

ok so I know I'm a kid with a new toy but for me PC gaming was better than consoles because you got higher definition, the option to use a keyboard and mouse and if you got bored of gaming you could use the PC for other stuff like the Internet.

For the budget you have you could get a PS3, a surround sound system and a 32" HD TV.

depends if you need a new PC anyway, in which case you might as well make it a good one.

Also depends on the games you play. Single player Shooters, RPG's or Strategy are slightly better on PC. everything else is much better on console (cue massive debate/flame war about the various platforms)

But i do get your point, if i was buying something purely to play games on, it would definately be a console

I moved from spending lost of money on upgrading the PC when new games came out to buying a xbox360.
At the time I took the P1ss out of the console guys but after getting one and not having to upgrade to the latest graphics card all the time to get the best fps it is the best move I made.

OK, Perhaps I should buy an MX5 ?

Not a console, TV or washing machine but a PC?

Whatever make/model you get just make sure it has a 2ghz+ Dual Core processor, 2gb+ of RAM and at least a 512mb graphics card. Should see you right.
