Was just playing ridge racer as normal and won a race. Faded to black and then the bloody thing froze. No option but to kill it from the switch on the back. Switched it back on and now it doesn't read any discs at all. Tried DVD's, and games and no joy.

Backed up my game data to USB stick and restored it to default - no joy.

Called the PS3 helpline and they were very good. Getting a brand new one sent to swap with mine at work on wednesday. Can't fault the service to be honest ! smile

I am doing a full on format as i type just in case it sorts it - otherwise its properly fecked.

Its a 40GB version on 2.10 firmware in case anyone is interested. Had it since november.

Not impressed - missing out valuable gaming time as the bird is away all this week biggrin!

Thats a bugger that is mate.

Gets me thinking though, of all the PS3s I've heard of that have failed the majority seem to be 40gig ones.

I worked fine yesterday... turned it on today.. won't read ANY discs... mad

any idea what happens to your profile/PSN credit etc when you change consoles???

I'm off to back my data up now, and then ring Sony and give them some shit first thing tomorrow!! furious

your online ID etc wont get lost so dont worry and you can save all your game data onto USB stick. You can i think back the whole system up to USB disk but never got the chance to do it.

What firmware/version do you have ?Was it all ok last night?no freezing etc?

I think its the laser playing up. Maybe it loses where it is so doesnt know where to start reading the disc...

Sony are good on the phone so i dont think there is much you can do apart from take it on the chin.

I will be writing a letter though as i dont want to get out of my warranty and this sh1t happens again and then i have to pay out !!

latest firmware.. updated a week or so ago.

It was absolutely fine yesterday, no freezes or anything..
I played a bit of the burnout demo tonight, then put the motorstorm disc in to have a play... and.. nothing! frown

It's all very well having good customer support (I'll report how I get on with them tomorrow), but having a £300 piece of electronic equipment that fails within 2 months (for me) is just not acceptable!

I know what you are saying about the cost/reliability issue. Thats why i am going to write a letter to sony stating my concerns about the console failing when my warranty lapses.

At the end of the day i hope its just a bad batch of lasers or something, but if it does happen again there will be trouble !! I am getting a new one sent to me tomorrow and apparently the helpdesk guy reckons these are a fresh batch just in so in theory should have any revisions they picked up on since they started making them. For all i know when i bought the first console it could have been one of the very first ones and had some design flaws or something?

I could hear the background noise in the call centre - it sounded pretty busy so lets hope this isnt a common occurance !

Hopefully i wont wreck it carrying it home tonight on the train/tube and i can carry on my ridge racer.

Let us know how you get on.

I'll probably be getting a PS3 once GT5 (or possibly a new wipeout game) and the price sort themselves out. smile

But for now I'm ball deep in 360 land.
