It’s my father in laws wake in a couple of weeks. My mother in laws wants to display some photos of his life, but I’m unsure how to display these photos, which are of course precious to her, with risking damaging them.
I’m going to get a couple of large noticeboards to put them on, but don’t know what to use. Pins are out of the question, but even something like blu tack feels like it could cause damage. Any suggestions?

I would definitely go with copies than risk damaging the originals.
If you have a scanner to make a decent digital copy, there are plenty of paces online that can print copies for you, or if you're pushed for time some branches of Boots have machines that can do it from a USB stick.

Scan and print them. Besides protecting the originals is means you can print to a larger size for display such as A3. Boots or any highstreet photoshop will sort you out, obviously don't post off the original photos to some online outfit.

We scanned a load and pinned them to a cheap cork board for my grandparents.

See the separate funeral thread if you're looking for any other ideas / inspiration! But maybe not pitch 'feed his ashes into a running Merlin at full chat' to the mother in law, unless the stereotype is true and you REALLY don't like her.

Either scan them yourself or have them professionally scanned.

From the files, you can have them printed directly onto something called Foamex. This is a rigid board - around 5mm thick. This can be trimmed to any size but best to stick to A4 or A3. Hit Google and search for local 'Large Format Printers, Display Printers and the like'

Then get some mini-easels or stands from Amazon and rest the boards on those.

Thank you, I think these are the answer. The mother in law lives 400 miles away so trying to get photos scanned and printed beforehand would have been difficult.

Good to see that a product that's been used for maybe a century has resurfaced! Easily forgotten now that nobody makes prints or has albums any more.
