Anyone doing this? My dad put me on to it a couple of weeks ago -

https://www.thetimes.com/puzzles/quizzes-and-tease...

I've just checked and you don't need a subscription. They publish a photograph, you have to guess the year and location the photo was taken from.

Quite often there's some good visual clues; an early Renault 5 in one of the pics allowed me to get within a year for the age, other times you can use google lens to get very close for the location - other times it gives you an obviously incorrect answer, while being adamant it's correct.

Quite fun.

Today - silver, 3 years and 200 odd miles out. Boo.

There is also the same type of game at: https://whentaken.com/

I've been playing it sporadically for 6 months or so, good coffee time distraction from work.

As was pointed out in the game black and white photos were the norm for newspapers until quite late in the 1980s so pictures will often appear “older” than they are. Cars and people’s clothes/hairstyles are good pointers.

It’s a fun game, sobering how scenes from the 1980s and 1990s look like they’re from another age which I suppose they are now. Must be getting old biggrin

I generally do OK apart from one howler where I thought Runcorn was New York…

I didn’t realise you don’t need a subscription to play so I’ve shared the link. Such a simple fun game…

When people were more sensible, everything worked OK, taxes were lower and prices reasonable.

Jumpers for goalposts I expect...

1 year, 190 yards, Diamond. Still struggling with getting the right 'camera' placement.

1 year / 1 mile: 95/100. Just quick guesses really but I assume some are a lot harder than that!

1 year and 882 yards out - my best so far.

@JimmyJimJim - as you're regularly getting very close distances, are you spending a fair bit of time trying to track down the location?

I'm basically just making a guess based solely on the photo, which is why I've been very wrong on quite a few. smile

The year really helps when you've got several car registrations in the picture.

Diamond here too - right year, 2 miles out, 96 points.

Players of this may enjoy maptap.

Yes, I spend a while trying to work out the exact subject of the pic. Quite often get it, then struggle with working out the corresponding camera position.

The one from the other day, the building had since been demolished, making it a bit difficult...

3 years, 8 yards. Diamond, but very arbitary, given the changes in the area.

The other day I managed a diamond - 1 year and 6 yards away (Checkpoint Charlie), although needed google maps to find it.

Today another diamond - 7 years and 258 yards away without using any other tools - just guessing.

On other days some of my guesses have been quite a few years, and several hundred miles away though.

Checkpoint Charlie was 2 years and 7 yards for me. Google maps for the location, guess for the date.
Today was 1 year and 49 yards, and proof that the person setting the vantage point is clearly wrong.
I've had the wrong continent once, aside from that, a couple hundred miles out was my next worst. 19 years was my worst for the date, though I was within 6 yards on that one....
9 years and 17 yards for the latest, diamond.
