Which one?!

I just want to take some footage of the kids while they are still small and cute and before they turn into monsters, and some obvious car related stuff.

Just for the memories, not for becoming an amateur film maker

I've consulted mates who are armchair experts and opinion varies wildly on brands, budgets and where to buy from.

Any opinion forthcoming from PHers in the know?

Just bought my Father in Law the entry level Canon one, got some sort of digital tape in it and can down load to PC via USB, not many buttons to fiddle with too.
Only with I could remember the bloody model number!

Helpful eh???

I'm, in hampshire too, where did you buy it from?

Is father in Law happy with it?

Maycott I was in fact talking arse, it was a Sony camcorder http://products.sony.co.uk/productdetail.asp?id=__6019&search=handycam+

He seems reasonably pleased with it, I've not actually seen any output yet but it really is only entry level. Web price is about £449 I paid £359 (If memory serves) from Sussex Camera Centre in Chichester, I couldn't find cheaper or more helpful chaps.

A quick "me too!" because I'm in exactly the same situation Want to buy for the same reasons but have no clue whatsoever about which to go for or why...

I guess a mini DV camera but that's about as far as I've got. Hoping to pick up a cheap one in the airport next week!

Mini DV because if it's universal compatibility.

Sony and Canon tend to make pretty decent kit at the budget end of the market.

Personally I'd avoid JVC stuff at this level.

The bigger the CCD chip, the better, and if your budget will allow you to stretch to a 3-CCD model, then do it. The resulting picture quality will be far superior.
