D100? OK not exactly the same, but I imagine many of the characteristics and interfaces are very similar; i.e. lessons learned from one could apply to the other. Now all I have to do is learn some lessons

Well here we go.

Imagine you're pointing the camera in a room, and the light is a bit poor. Say you're pulling 1/10 sec at max aperture. If you pop the flash up, you'd expect the shutter speed to go up to at least 1/60 (synch speed is 1/60 - 1/500). Indeed the manual says that this is so, on P and AP settings.

However, when I try this the shutter speed drops to 1"+ !! The flash is set to 'normal' but it's as though I'd selected slow synch. Hence the flash fires but you get camera shake too. If I select Auto, it's fine and behaves as it should: it's just on P and A. I have no EV dialled in.

Any ideas?
