Hi, are there any hard a fast rules as to how much manipulation you can do in Photoshop before the EXIF data is removed.

For example, cropping appears fine, but if you sharpen the image, the EXIF data seems to be lost.

Now, I know that technically once you start fiddling with photos the EXIF data is irrelevent, however, I still value it for reference.

TIA

I've met this as well, though just like you I haven't defined it. I think it's a good idea always to keep your original image untouched, so if you're PSing it, use Save As to create a new file.

What do you mean by "lose the EXIF data". You can do a lot (as much as you want?) to a photo in PS and it wil still retain the exposure information etc. Are you trying to submit to an online contest or something like that?

No I'm just cropping and tweaking copies (file copies) of the original image. On a couple of occassions the EXIF data has disappeared. However, I've just been sorting out my website gallery and the images I've tweaked tonight are OK, all EXIF data intact (IFD0,EXIF, FILE etc).

Maybe it's a glitch with PS (running 7). It's not a huge issue, but like I say, I like to use EXIF as a reference point so that I can learn from mistakes (ie too shallow DOF, wrong shutter speed etc, etc)

Hope this makes sense.
