Problem with a Canon 550D
Discussion
Have any of you come across this intermittent issue with a 550D before and if so what had you to do to solve it ....
When I press the shutter button it takes a picture like normal but when I realise the button sometimes it takes another picture (or sometimes multiple additional pictures).
The camera would be on single shot when this happens, the firmware is up to date, and it is definitely an issue in the camera as I've tried exchanging everything (cards / battery / lenses / etc) but the problem remains.
It doesn't happen every time and there is no real pattern to when it will happen or when it'll work normally.
The shutter count isn't very high, probably around 50,000 (can't read it off this camera but I've about 30,000 stored images from this and I'm guessing I'd have dumped no more than 40% of what was taken so it's a fairly reasonable estimate).
It's an absolute pain in the hole as I can end up with loads of rubbish on the card and if it goes and takes loads of additional pictures the camera basically freezes until they're all written onto the card.
Have any of you come across this before?
If so what's the fix?
A new camera is probably not too far off at this stage but I'd still like to hold on to this as a back-up camera.

No, on this camera bracketing switched off automatically when the camera is powered off.
I'm starting to believe it is the shutter button itself that is faulty as the problem doesn't happen if I use the shutter button on the battery grip, it just happens if I use the button on the camera.
I've been given an estimate of around €80 to replace the button so I'm not sure if I'll even bother getting it fixed, I might just upgrade altogether and possibly strip this one down myself when I have a replacement available

Ah, OK, well on that basis the button sounds like a good candidate for the source of the problem.I'm starting to believe it is the shutter button itself that is faulty as the problem doesn't happen if I use the shutter button on the battery grip, it just happens if I use the button on the camera.

More importantly I can't think of a better reason or approach for satisfying your upgrade desire.

My old 40D had a similar problem, but sometimes it wouldn't take a photo when you first pressed the shutter button.
Followed a youtube tutorial on how to clean the button without taking anything apart (pour in some alcohol), and it made it a lot better.
I've searched YouTube for that video and didn't manage to find itFollowed a youtube tutorial on how to clean the button without taking anything apart (pour in some alcohol), and it made it a lot better.

By any chance did you bookmark it, have you still the link?
A quick searched...

Not condoning this method, have never tried it (and probably wouldn't try it unless it was a last resort).

Update time ....
I bought a new 7D mark 2 a few months back and I'm well happy with that, serious piece of kit compared to the 550D, and I decided to see if I could fix the old one myself.
I hit Ebay and found a new full top cover for a 550D in Hong Kong and had it landed in Ireland for €28 and fitted it tonight following the instructions on ifixit.com and the camera is now perfect again.
Happy days, a 7D mark 2 as my main toy and the old camera back to life as a spare

Yeah it's a serious difference between the two.
The 3 big differences are the speed, how well it handles low light / high ISO and the tracking focus points but thty're just the start of it.
It's in a whole different league to the 550D.
See if you can get your hands on a demo model to have a play with and I reckon you'll be well impressed.
