Any reason not to buy a variable neutral density filter opposed to various singles? And are there any particular brands of ND filters to buy or avoid?

I'm no expert, but I've just been investigating different ND filters for an upcoming trip and it seems variable ones can create a big X in the image on the more extreem stops.
Take a look at breakthrough filters, they seem to have eliminated any colour caste that you can get from using ND filters.
I'm looking at buying a 3 and a 6 stop filter from breakthrough, so I can also get a 9 stop out of the combo
But before you buy look at some reviews, it seems colour caste is the no1 issue with ND filters, something breakthrough has got over at a reasonable price, well, reasonable compared to other makes!
The other thing to do is buy large version and the get step rings for the smaller lenses you have so you only buy 1 filter for all lenses.
Note this is all from Internet research, someone with some real world experience may be able to assist further
