HD Action Cams Poor Battery Life
Discussion
Interested to hear others experiences of Action cam battery lives.
Seems that reading a lot of reviews on various Cams it seems to be a common issue. Last year I bought a Liqued Image Ego HD cam. It was cheaper than some GoPro models but by no means bottom of the pricing spectrum.
The first one arrived quickley and I charged it up and it held its charge for a good 10mins before shutting down and refusing to do anything further. I contacted the supplier who relaced it without quibble with a new camera which arrived the very next day, already charged and tested and a free Micro SD installed. Great service. The camera worked for about 30 mins then died. I recharged it and next use went on a bit longer and managed to hol a charge when switched off. The film it recorded was clear and while ease of operation was O.K. it's buttons were a tad fiddly.
So, a few mths on I arrive in the 3 Valley ski area, unseasonably warm (had heard that in really cold conditions they can be problematic) get the camera set up in the chest harness and 10 mins later it is absolutely flat. Not only that but refused to recharge, switch on, and the PC wouldn't even recognise its USB connection as it was so dead.
It is now useless and basically junk. I want to get a cam for around the £100.00 mark and although GoPro hae a great rep even the Hero has been reported as having battery life issues.
Are they just cr4p batteries that need upgrading (the EGO's are sealed units so cant change them) or is this just an issue for action cams? Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

The specs say 1.5-2 hours so it maybe that you've bought a camera with a dud battery? Even though it's sealed you can still open it and replace the battery, just takes a bit of work. Alternatively you can get a usb power pack and plug it into the camera to boost the battery life.
I've got a garmin Virb and it lasts for 3 hours plus has a swappable battery pack.

Any of the SJ4000 range are good value and just as good as more expensive ones. Spare batteries are cheap off amazon and a slightly larger capacity. You could easily get two cams for the price of your other one. The M10 is their slightly updated version looking like the session GoPro.
I've got a Sony AS30V and the battery seems okay. When I used it for time delay photos, the battery went in about an hour, but for video, it's been fine. The sessions I've used it for video have been about and hour and a half where the camera has been on all the time, but only recording for about 15 minutes (surfing) and when I've looked at the camera afterwards, it's been on three quarters battery.
Thanks for the replies.
Untakenname, Like the idea of an external power source with a USB but it will make it a difficult fit in the harness. Still may well be worth investigating. I had a look at trying to crack one open (have 2 as they didn't wat the first dud back) and as it was fudded anyway wasn't bothered about butchering it a bit but could really see how to start the process. have you actually done this dude?
