Sad times chaps, dropped my 70-200L while on holiday in Cuba (on the first day!! *furious*). (

Like an idiot, left the side of my bag open, fell around 1.5m onto hard floor. Terrible sound.

No glass broken. However the lens won't focus, either on AF or MF.

Adjusting the zoom, it does not feel smooth at all (almost like a rough/grating feel). Adjusting the focus it simply does nothing.

Looks like the fall has buggered the focus/ultrasonic motors.

Given the above - likely repairable? It was the non IS so not crazy money (~£400) but I'd be delighted if it can be fixed for less.

Opinions? TIA smile

I feel your pain, recently realised that my Nikon 55-200 VR was no longer VRing - I think it was when I picked up my camera bag and the pocket was open, lens was on the camera and it rolled out and fell awkwardly on its end. Thought the filter had saved the lens by breaking but it seems not.

I looked into it and repair costs are pretty steep, getting on for £100 even to open up the lens, so mine being a cheapie (4-5.6) I just bought another second hand (£70).

Presumably yours is a 2.8 or something for that sort of money?

Canon UK have fixed prices for repairs of most of the less expensive lenses, for instance my EF-S 10-22 costs about £156 including the return carriage. I daresay they would give you a price for yours if you rang them.

I had the entire focus mechanism replaced on my 70-200L 2.8 IS a couple of years ago by Fixation. It was working approximately but wasn't focusing perfectly sharp. They charged £280 to replace the mechanism at the time.

Doh, especially bad early on in a trip.

I've had a similar problem sorted by Fixation so I'm sure your lens will be fixable.

Just like my 17-55mm, which Fixation did a great job on.

Only the F4 non IS, which is available on Amazon for £435. If it can be repaired for <£150, it's worth a go.

I know. frown

My favourite walk around lens as I like street shots/candids so I was in a bit of a grump to say the least!

Is it covered on your travel or home insurance policy?
