What would be a good step up from Windows Movie Maker? I've tried Premier Elements but I'd put that with WMM as being very limited.
I've tried Premier Pro but that's a little too advanced for me and my laptop cant keep up graphics wise.

Basically I'd like to crop and lightly edit video/colour correct, if WMM did this I'd be sweet.

I'm by no means a video expert, but I've got Premiere Elements 13 and I can do the actions you mention. What version did you try?

The free GoPro vid editing software is surprisingly good. (Doesn't need to be GoPro footage). It'll crop, re-colour, speed up, slow down, saturate, expose, with multiple audio tracks - output up to 4k. For free.

The only thing that is strange to a first time user is that you have to convert a file before you edit. After that it's a breeze.

This took me 10 minutes yesterday (cropped, sped up, slowed down etc.. (footage not from a goPro)

ETA link to software.. GoPro studio is part of it.

I bought Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11 and I think it's a great bit of software.

For £20 I'd rate it higher than the free solutions out there and I've used MS Movie Maker and the GoPro app.

This is exactly the product I bought

it's since been updated to v13. I assume it's the same product line with slightly different branding. I'm not sure enough to say either way

£33 might be better value than the old version but do your homework

Sony Vegas is very good. Fairly easy to sync footage from two cameras and then cut between the two (by dropping the opacity of the top track to zero) while using the sound track from just one of them. If you want to, that is.

I think, for the price, Sony Vegas Movie Studio or Sony Movie Studio would be where my money would go. Plenty of YouTube tutorials for it as well

Version 14, it seems to crop theres a very, very convoluted way to crop.

In 13, it's hidden away under effects and transform, but it seems straightfoward once you find it smile
