Discussion
Years ago I used Canon AE1 with various lenses a lot and loved it. But now of course we are all digital. I have a small Coolpix Nikon for handy walkabout snaps but now want a DSLR to play with. Looking up to 100 squids, decent lens maybe a 70-200 zoom or 2 a 35-70 and 70-200. Second hand from e*ay of course. Is "live view" a must?
Would love some recommendations.
shots will be just regular tourist pictures, travelling etc no pro stuff.
Thnx

Assuming that budget is for body only, I think you might (with a bit of a stretch) get to a secondhand Nikon D200. They were well built and go on for years - as some around these parts would testify.
I couldn't really imagine contemplating anything earlier D1/D70/D100, and anything more recent (with possible exception of D2) would probably be above that budget point....
PS - you'd be better off with a body with the lens AF drive, so I'd dismiss the D40/D50 types too, even though they might have youth on their side.

OP wants a decent DSLR with 35-70 and 70 -200 and live view.... spending up to £100.
My wish list just got a lot longer.
Appreciatte the replies so far but I only asked .......IF live view is a must!!!My wish list just got a lot longer.
I have so far seen 2 Nikon d3100 bodies only for under 100. A D70 and Sonly alpha 200 under 100. 2 D3000 under 50.
Keep an eye out for a D40x, if you're lucky you'll get one with an 18-55 kit lense and a few batteries or filters for £100 but in reality £100 is unlikely to get you a DSLR with 2 lenses. Sub £100 bodies and cheap lenses and the bread and butter of photography students. Most stick with a brand and will upgrade the body and keep the lenses or vice versa.
The early Sony Alphas are a good shout on a budget. there are lots of old Minolta A-mount lenses to try but old is the key word.

I have to ask this I'm afraid. A 'MUST' for what?Asking if live-view is a must on a camera is a bit like asking if a hatch-back is a must when buying a car - it depends what you want to do with it.

"Do you want to be able to take pictures while holding the camera at arms length and peering at the small screen on the back, or are you content to look through the viewfinder?" THIS is my ?? Is it worth the extra $$ coz LV is only available on later cameras and I don't think I will get a body under 100, BUT I think I will be able to get a decent DSLR ...older but OK for 50!

We can not tell you if live view is worth it for you. You must make that choice.
Old bodies without it work just fine. New bodies tend to be better. It seems a very strange thing to fixate on. Your AE1 didn't have it and I assume you were happy with that?

Silly indeed!162020366991
Pros - the camera will take photos just as good as it did when it cost £999 body-only.
The 18-70 lens is a decent lens and worth £80+ s/h.
On the more advanced side, it has an electromagnetic shutter which can synch with studio lights up to 1/1000th sec and more, and it can be adapted to infra-red photography.
Cons - high-ISO performance is poor and the screen is small compared to modern offerings.
6Mp is enough for most things; I've had A3 prints from it and they look fine.
The D200 has better ISO performance and a bigger screen, but IIRC bodies go for about £100.
