We went to my mate's baby christening last week and I was asked if I would take my "proper camera" to get some decent photos of the service and guests ect during the day. Some formal pics but mostly none formal, just wandering around capturing people enjoying themselves.

It was an extremely hot day so the beer was flowing quite nicely among the guests and myself. I got the formal ones at the church so the beer was ok to be drinking (that's my excuse lol).

Occasionally I switched burst mode [1st setting of 3 burst shots] if it involved kids doing something or for the occasional posed shot to avoid getting someone who was blinking. It turned into an 11 hour day, going back to mates house to sit out in the garden until it got dark.
As the day went on and the drink flowed, I left burst mode on longer than I thought and managed to take 868 pictures during the day.

I had switched it over to burst mode 2, which has 7 fps. Was an extremely good day and they were over the moon with the photos, even though some of the later shots were as I was seeing them in real life after x number of beers-a bit blurred beerlaughdrinkwobble

My Sony does 12fps however I rarely use that, at the 74 Members Meeting at Goodwood in March I did over 2300 images in the day filling up my 64gb card a 16gb card and started on a second 16gb card!!

This is where I found out I have to be absolutely ruthless with the delete option when reviewing back home.

I think for social situations burst mode is over-rated and never use it, preferring to time my moment. No use if you use flash either.

My old camera does 3fps and 5fps. Even for fast-moving subjects 3 is enough; 5 mostly gives photos that all look the same and have to be deleted. Unless you're shooting F1 of course.

All my pics were taken in bright sunshine so no flash involved. Iv'e seen some of your shots simpo and they are always spot on, well the one's you post on here are. We've not seen your re cycle binscratchchinhehe

But surely even you can't account for someone blinking or looking down when the shot is fired. Even when they are not posed shots it is still nice to have eyes open, tounge in etc. You can look at the screen and re take if necessary, but none posed shots are just that, no re take available. That's my excuse anyway

Thanks Tony, obviously not all are mantlepiece candidates but in terms of rejects, about 15% of the ones I bring home get weeded out for various reasons.

I check almost every one on the hoof as you say, and you'd be surprised how easy it is to do a quick retake if required. A lot of it is anticipation, position and speed - in that order! smile

Agreed I do a couple of sifts of all the images, to make sure only the best are kept.

Manage to get two red arrows crossing at RIAT last year, different coloured smoke and all. Had to delete 30 or so in that attempt that were scattered either side.

It's one of the things I find amazing about the 1Dx mk II - 14 fps with full AE and AF on every frame!

Mine does 11fps and I used it the other day to get one group shot for my gran with all the great grandkids in. 9 kids varying from 1 - 10 years old, took 160 shots and none of them were looking the right way any one picture. I had two that were nearly there so had to cut a couple of heads off from other pictures

It's a tough target. 0/160 for one group photo is hard to beat!
