I'm guessing, but Tripadvisor (via what you copied and pasted) sounds like Facebook, in that you upload content to 'their' site and it is then 'their' copyright.
By uploading you agree to 'their' terms and conditions.
I've read an article recently about Tripadvisor which isn't necessarily to do with images, but may help.

Yep, unless by uploading them it means you've agreed to something else. Witness the BBC competitions a few years ago. Judging by Pidsy's comment Tripadvisor is the same.Publishers are granted a licence to use the work.
There's no 'contact' button so I can't see how to ask them.
This might help...

It is the last paragraph that explains their copyright policy.

'Please note that by uploading photos, you are granting TripAdvisor the non-exclusive rights to use, copy, re-purpose and display those photos at our discretion...'
Hmm, not sure if that's copyright or license. I wouldn't mind if I could put my URL on them and at least get some free advertising, but thy say 'No photos that include logos, titles, branding, promotional material, or any other content intended for commercial purposes.'
Looks like they won't get them then.
And whatever it is, it should be on the uploading page.

No, Tripadvisor is cover by UK copyright law and a contract doesn't trump UK common law. What you are agreeing to to provide them with a licence to use the image, not transferring/selling the copyright, technically called an assignment. Websites cannot just appropriate copyright because they want to, no matter what it says in the TOS.There's no 'contact' button so I can't see how to ask them.

By uploading 'your' images you agree to the terms and conditions stated by Tripadvisor.
If you don't like those terms and conditions then don't upload any images to Tripadvisor.
It is not 'your' website.
It is owned by somebody else.
You have no control over what happens to 'your' images if you upload them to a website owned by somebody else.
